Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage is angry that his American nationality hindered his chance to become James Bond because he thinks the prejudice is petty and stupid - reports Contact Music.
The "Con Air" star resents the unwritten rule which states the secret spy can only be played by British actors and is devastated he will probably never get another opportunity to try for the role.
He says, "You can cast a Brit to play Bond but you can never cast an American to play him. "I think that is totally unfair."
Cage was a "secret contender" to play 007 according to the report, but lost out to "Layer Cake" star Daniel Craig, who was announced as the official 007 #6 earlier this month.
I'm an American. Damn right!
I think that it may have to do more with his thinning hair and waning career.
Not only that, but they only allow MALE ACTORS to play him. Bigots!
You should have heard Cage scream when he found out he couldn't play Ray Charles!
And, I might add, only adults! And are they prejudiced against ugly, fat men? You bet they are! Where's the ACLU?
This is "The Onion," right? I thought we weren't supposed to post from there.
Bond's a Brit (or a Scot). Live with it, Nic.
I don't think the Broccoli's own the rights to every Bond story. The story to Thunderball I think was stuck in litigation for years, and another production company did the film as 'Never Say Never Again.'
Cage has clout: get the rights to Thunderball and show the Broccoli's you can do it better.
Though I really think the Bond franchise should be shelved for 25-30 years, it's just too stale.
Waning career? Half of Cage's movies have grossed over $100 million. Cage is one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood and he can play anyone, good or evil.
Does Cage intend to fake an accent, or just play it as some kind of rogue American in her majesty's secret service?
"You can cast a good Brit actor to play Bond but you can never cast a bad American pseudo actor who got into films because of nepotistic Hollywood log rolling practices and his uncle Francis Ford Coppola to play him. "I think that is totally unfair."
You don't have to be a weatherman to know which way the wind blows and you don't have to be real smart to be an actor.
Uh, scuse me dude, but, uh,...life's not uh,..fair. Get a clue.
I think it is unfair my skin dolor hurt my chances to play Ray Charles in that movie. =o)
I didn't read the posts before making mine. LOL
I enjoy watching his films but I guess I was commenting that he'd been in a few clunkers not so long ago. I do want to see the new one, but it's not a sign that he has a mainstream comedy.
Cage has range and versitality. He's right up there with Robert De Niro.
The Britts want 007 and Harry Potter to be played by Britts. I heard Spielberg was pushing for Haley Joel Osment to be Harry Potter, but Rowling insisted the role has to go to a Britt kid.
:-) I did not mean to offend.
I did say that I appreciated his work.
OK... just pointing out that George Lazenby was Australian.
Never say, Never...
An American who could have played James Bond
An American who did play Jimmy Bond
I suspect that soon there will be an adventure series written about a "top secret" female American agent who has a desk job and sends her husband out on missions to take down the "evil" Georgebush and his henchman Mr. Rove.
It is being broadcast in serialized form on television. It doesn't draw much ratings and there are some inconsistencies in the plot.
