When I try to open a particular document, Word tells me it encountered a serious error the last time it tried to so so. When I say "yes" to try to open anyway, Word hangs up.
I have tried redownloading and replacing the document I am trying to open, but I get the same problem. I can open other documents fine.
Any help is appreciated. I'm using XP Home Sp2. Thanks.
I know something typed on notepad etc can't be opened on Word. Could it be the document was not typed on a format compatible with Word? Just a guess

first scan it for viruses. then open it using the file filter "recover data from any file". you may not see formatting with it, however.

Was the particular document made with your copy of that program or are you importing it?
If you imported it, then from what program?
Could be a corrupted file.
