When I first got here, Kilauea went off at the top. Pretty good show for a week or so. About a year later, a vent opened on Kilauea's flank above Kalapana (Black Sands beach and Queen's Bath). From vantage points at night this was spectacular from where I lived, about 8 miles away. A bright red plume in the sky up to 800 ft, every night for months. Jinx, that vent has been going off since '83. Doesn't have the huge plume anymore but is still pumping lava.
