It did look like the ball hit the bat and deflected down.

It also looked like Qualls' first pitch collided with the bat and became a grand slam.

Hit, strikeout, a walk--tying runs on.

No. The plate ump decided that he didn't like the way things were going, so he simply set it all up thus.

I know you're kidding (as least I think you are) and I don't really think that's what happened, but y'all explain something to me I've been wondering for years.

What would stop a baseball umpire from "calling" a game? I'm NOT talking about this game; I'm talking about just in general. What would stop an umpire from taking 100K in a Swiss bank account in exchange for a few crucial calls? Or what would stop a La Cosa Nostra deal where the ump wants his family to stay safe?

No fair laughing at this question. I'm not a huge baseball fan but I've always wondered about this. :-)

I've seen my share of bad first pitches. I think Aaron Boone's HR in the '03 ALCS to send the Yanks to the World Series (off
Wakefield) was a first pitch.

like I said earlier...want some cheese?? think about it...if any of those calls went the other way..., and Houston was the benefactor...does it discount how good the Sox are???

Yeah but it is inexcusable that he didn't learn from Lidge's mistake a week earlier, instead repeating it on his first pitch. Inexcusable. I have some sympathy for Lidge, none for Qualls. The Astros should trade him in the off-season, once a bonehead always a bonehead.

Luckily the bats may have just saved him.

Wasn't that great?! Woo Hoo! We need at least one more run. I won't feel good unless we get one more run.

That was awesome!
