Forget The IPod, PEZ MP3 Player Stands Out
Published: Oct 17, 2005
Now that Apple Computer has sold 28 million, the iPod grabs headlines but not the attention it once did when you walk down the street.
Everyone, it seems, has one.
Ho-hum.
If you want to stand out from the herd while listening to tunes on the go, check out the PEZ MP3 Player at www.pezmp3.com.
The $100 player looks like the iconic PEZ dispenser. The head even flips back to reveal the on/off switch.
With 512 megabytes of storage space -- the same as Apple's entry-level iPod Shuffle -- PEZ MP3 holds about 120 songs, is USB 2.0 compatible, and can be used as a flash drive to hold data files.
And it's bound to be a conversation starter.
The player is the brainchild of Pat Misterovich, a stay-at-home dad working out of his basement in Springfield, Mo.
"Last summer I had this thought: 'Wouldn't it be cool if there was an MP3 player that looked like a PEZ dispenser?' " he writes on the Web.
"You see, I had been reading this article about a guy who had turned an Altoids tin into iPod speakers. Out of curiosity I thought I would ask PEZ if they might be willing to license their brand for such a thing. To my astonishment they didn't think I was crazy."
Misterovich had 5,000 players made in the form of the PEZ Pal Boy, a character that was introduced in the mid-'60s.
He says he chose the character for the first edition of the player for a simple reason.
"It is the first PEZ dispenser I remember owning as a kid," he says. "It is possible that my memory is flawed and I owned a Batman or Popeye first, but I distinctly remember having a PEZ that looked like this guy."

Maybe I could get the boss tobuy me one and call it a flash drive.
Dumb question alert. Can you partition these things into different genre or do you have to do that by song order alone? I do't really want to listen to Abba after hearing Rage Against The Machine
Yes.
No.

This will appeal to 14 year old boys and girls. The same way they have the candy that looks like a pacifier...etc.
It is a gimmick that will appeal to some. But you won't see adults with them on airliners...
Good.
You can bet that [http://www.pez.com/] (home: Orange, Connecticut) is getting a pretty royalty on these...
(ping to nutmeg)
Ouch - THAT could leave a mark!
How about the "PREZ" dispenser?
Every time you tilt the head back you get the same stale candy (that was imported from another country)?
Did you know eBay was started as a venue to trade nothing but Pez dispensers?
(Hint: Those enterprising computer geeks weren't 14.) Anyway, that left me with the impression that there must be a fair number of adult Pez dispenser collector-fanatics.
See post #8. (Thanks, solitas)
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
The story I heard was that eBay was started so that the designer's wife could sell her Beany Babies...
That may be true, but I don't see adults buying these. But I could be wrong, I have been wrong before and will be again...
Did you also know Silly Putty is a Connecticut thing? Here's a timeline of silly putty history: http://www.sillyputty.com/history_101/history101.htm.
The place where it was made for a time is about a mile from my house, as the cow flies.
So are Frisbees
