The Hobbit Hole XXV - Fare you well! Fare you well!
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 10/15/2005 7:13:08 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Fare you well! Fare you well!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

But, she's southern, traditional and religious. And she puts up with a lot to get what she wants.

I'm not yet sure how/when she finds out about him. It may not be until after the funeral (which is where the story opens).

Actually, ramii is a cool word! I'll use it somewhere in my science fiction stuff, if y'all don't mind.

So

1) who all is doing Nanowrimo?

2) do we have a discussion forum set up?

I have plausibility questions...

Corin, there have been M(a)cKenzies in Mississippi. As for family money ... maybe they made it in retail? A string of grocery stores in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia? Or car dealerships?

As for old money ... Alexander McVeigh Sr. started McVeigh Wheelwright and Company, a buggy and wagon manufactory and repair concern, in 1850; by the 1980s, Alexander McVeigh V ran McVeigh Auto Repair, a region-wide name in car repair with dozens of garages in four states.

I'm signed up, but I don't know how far I'll go with it.

Depends on how much time I have available and whether the plot finally materializes in my brain.

Dang, you're good.

That'll work then. I'm thinking the money came from timber. But her grandfather and father were attorneys and perhaps judges. The husband is an attorney as well and her father sets him up in law practice.

There were Scots-Irish all up in the Delta; coulda been some MacKenzies. Her Grandaddy could have been a banker, the owner of a big department store or the owner of the cotton gin to which all the farmers brought their crops, any of which her Daddy could have inherited. She likely went to the "W" (Mississippi University for Women) in Columbus, and was maybe a Tri-Delt or Kappa Delta.

Or her family might have owned a lot of timber land, or owned a Foundry in South Mississippi. If she didn't go to the "W", she might have gone to the Univ. of Southern Mississippi (Southern Miss), which boasted several Miss Mississippis, and she was probably STILL a Tri-Delt or a KD. And that about exhausts my knowledge of the monied class in MS since I weren't one of them. ;o)

BTW, thanks for the Corn Dogs!!

You're welcome!

I'm thinking, since my characters are in public life, that I'll make up a university. It'll be a lot like Ole Miss. But that's where they meet...I think...

I'll likely have more questions.

I was digging around and seeing what might have been shipped thru Gulfport and came up with the timber industry. It'll work.
