The Hobbit Hole XXV - Fare you well! Fare you well!
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 10/15/2005 7:13:08 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Fare you well! Fare you well!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Actually, this Silver Award dinner is for the four girls who just joined our Troop this year. Clare got her Silver Award three years ago. She decided she didn't want to go for a Gold Award. That's fine. It is a lot of work; too much, in my opinion. There's a lot of stuff that seems superfluous, and also designed to steer certain types of girls to the Award. Girls who may be shy about approaching strangers to assist, are at a distinct disadvantage. I think girls who are not quite as assertive need to have the opportunity for the Award, as well as the Type A, girls, but that's just MNSHO. ;o)

Our #1 son is an Eagle, and he didn't have to do near as much to get it as the girls do for their Gold Awards. I don't know if the Girl Scouts designed it that way in a one-upmanship way; if so, that's kind of silly. Our Council is kind of hinky, too. They're political in the sense that if they don't like the Troop leader, they can make it difficult for her girls to be approved to go on for their Gold Project, even if they're ready to get started. The other Senior Troop leader has that problem. She's very outspoken about what she thinks is best for the girls, and doesn't like to see them jacked around by the Council folks. It seems her girls are punished for this, and that is just not right. There are a lot of arbitrary rules that this Council has, that others don't, and it makes it difficult for fundraising, for example, that doesn't involve massive amounts of time on the girls' part, and as Senior Girl Scouts, they just don't have a whole lot of extra time anymore, being in high school, etc.

Ugh. Say no more. That is why I hate Girl Scouting. I got my Gold, back in the day, but felt the Eagle was the more meaningful award. Eagles demand more true leadership development, Golds are just politics. I was so bitter afterwards that I spent the next five summers working for the BSA! lol

Hmm, maybe that's why we never did Girl Scouting...

Mornin'!

Had to run to the pediatrician with Becky this morning. She had a rash all over his face that had spread to the rest of her body.

She's got Fifth Disease. Nothing too serious and it should go away in a few days.

I'm just glad all of the pregnant women sitting around me are all past their first trimester since this particular sickness can harm the unborn.

Luke had a fever and the barfs Wednesday night and yesterday. He's fine now too.

Did you have to stay home today?

Don't I wish I could have.

Today begins the busiest season of the year for the company. There is a blackout on all employee time off from today through January 15th.

POLICY READS: Unless you're dying or already dead, you'd better come in.

My mom is watching her. Alyson's at school.

We haven't had any trouble in that regard, but I have always either been the Troop Leader or Co-leader, or volunteered to help the leaders with the troop she was in. As a Troop leader, I kept a tight rein on what our girls did with regard to the Council. I also had a good talk with Clare before she went off to her first summer camp with the Girl Scouts. I needed her to be aware and take care of herself. It's awful to have to do that with a 6th grader, but the camp employed GS volunteers from all over, and since I didn't know them, I didn't trust them. ;o)

I'll save that for "Ground Balrog Day"

"How shall we kills him today presciouses?"

"Let's blow his heads off, bit by bit."

"Seems reasonable."

Not even NaNo can silence my inner proofreader... inner editor, sure, but that obnoxious spelling and grammar demon lurks always.

See... Mom carefully instilled that demon in me. It's useful most of the time so I tolerate it during November.

HA! He-who-must-not-have-his-head-blowed-off-more-than-30-times-in-one-novel just came in (again). I looked at him and said "Ask me a question you think I can't answer!"

He couldn't.
