The Hobbit Hole XXV - Fare you well! Fare you well!
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 10/15/2005 7:13:08 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Fare you well! Fare you well!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Heh...I spent a LOT of time wearing an eye patch myself when I was little. Lazy eye, or whatever the proper term for that is. The patch was supposed to fix it.

But I'm still near legally blind in that eye. Without correction, I can't even read the letters on my keyboard from more than a handspan away or so.

Not that that has to do with anything. But I can identify with the depth perception issues and such that go along with being one-eyed. ;-)

Nighters. You can keep your portion for tomorrow's betting, if you wish.

As you wish. :-)

You and Tait have something in common!

He's a neat guy. He's Apache Springs' new police chief. He's also, by rights, an heir to the Pfouts fortune ... but he's illegitimate, so he'll never see a penny as long as his grandmother's still alive ...

Oh, Apache Springs makes Peyton Place look like a cloister!

Well, duh!

Besides, I'm just writing your life as I see it ... including an engineer for you.

As for the Hairs, well ... they like their thirty acres with a creek running through it ...

One of the first nighttime television soap operas. First it was a best-selling novel that broke all the publishing records; then it was a hit movie, nominated for several awards. Then it was a TV series, one I was NOT allowed to watch when I was little.

Peyton Place was a small town full of turmoil, secrets, lies, gossip, et cetera, et cetera. It was the prototype of must-see TV. The name of the show entered the lexicon; it was even mentioned in a country song, "Harper Valley P.T.A.":

Well, there's Bobby Taylor sittin' there, and seven times he's asked me for a date.
And Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lot of ice whenever he's away ...
And Mr. Baker, can you tell us why your secretary had to leave this town?
And shouldn't Widow Jones be told to keep her window shades all pulled completely down?

Well, Mr. Harper couldn't be here 'cause he stayed too long at Kelly's Bar again.
And if you smell Shirley Thompson's breath, you'll find she's had a little nip of gin.
Then you have the nerve to tell me you think that as a mother I'm not fit?
Well, this is just a little Peyton Place, and you're all Harper Valley hypocrites!

Sorry, I left out the dates ... the book Peyton Place came out in 1956 or '57, and the TV show was on when I was in school, so that would have been sometime around 1964. I remember watching it for a while, when I was older ... but there were at least two revivals of Peyton Place, stretching into my high school years, I think, so I may be conflating the various series.

Check this out! This is Gidget watching this commercial that makes her go totally nuts.

LMAO! Maybe the strange motion makes her think it's some sort of strange bug.

I used to drive Marl's house cats nuts with a laser pointer, until she banned its use. I didn't race the dot around the floor, but let it "creep" along like a bug. They'd pounce, open their paws, and find nothing, so they'd start combing through the carpet pile, looking for it.

I'm really disappointed. Tried to pick a fight with Murrymom today... and she wimped out.

Geez, is she still around? Of course, I don't go poking around in the FR sub-sub-basement.

I was guest speaker tonight at a meeting of Mighigan Military Moms (and dads). Brought a big bunch of stuff and did two hours of show-and-tell. Got more requests from them, maybe some hits (and donations) on the web site. And I laid out our financial status on the table for them. Ecurbh, do you have a hit counter there?

I also got to meet one of the "kids", Navy SEAL, looks 16, must weigh 150 lbs. He got one of our Extrema Ratios, said his jaw dropped when he saw it, and he'll have top braggin' rights when he gets back to work.

Items shown included the Pelican IR flasher, and the Spec Ops flashlight sheath. He was impressed by both. He says they have an unlimited budget for goodies, but he never saw either thing, and thought they could be quite useful. I invited him to visit our web site for product reviews.

It was great to talk to folks in realtime, and field their questions. I know they think I (and we)are crazy, but as Hair says, "it's a good kind of crazy".

As he, and the dads with prior service said, these items are picked out by people who know soldiering.

I have to take these holidays one at a time. I've got a rough outline for Christmas, but I'm in execution phase for Thanksgiving right now.

Big'ol was so funny the other day. He said, "Wow, we've got all the holidays coming up: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Spring Training."

Er, I don't think 'pitchers and catchers reporting' is technically a holiday. I'm certainly not going to cook big for it! :P

The TV Show Peyton Place was on when I was a kid. Didn't watch it. But wasn't Mia Farrow in that version?

Lana Turner and Hope Lange were in the movies (there was two).

mmmmmmmm Lana Turner, Hope Lange....

My Mama loves her movies. Moment to Moment (Hope Lange) and Madam X (Ingrid Bergman) were two of her favorites. I think she finally found 'em both on VHS.

But if her movies were on, that's what we'd watch. My dad would tolerate 'em. I think the bourbon helped.

Mornin'. Y'all are prolly the two that can help me with fashion advice. Nothing personal to the rest o' the folks, but I'm fairly certain I'm the only one (or one of the only ones) regularly in a suit or at least a tie. That said.

Men's double-breasted suit. Still acceptable or out of style?

IOW, since it fits again, do I keep/wear it? Or does it go to Goodwill?

Discuss.
