I have a little Memorex gadget with I forget how much onboard memory and capable up to 512MB SD cards. Cost under $40 without the card, another $40 for the card. Holds 6 hours of MP3 or WMA and plays it all off one AA battery. That's enough for me :)

My Will got an iPod mini for $250 last October with birthday money and lawn mowing money. He loves it. It will hold around 1,000 songs and he has around 300+ on it right now. All you need is the ipod and a computer to facilitate the transfer of songs from either CD or the itunes website.
He just told me that the "mini" is now obsolete, they aren't making any more. I would advise getting the best you can afford to stave off obsolescence as long as possible.
I've got the 30GB one on my Christmas list this year...;^)

iPod nano ... it's the cool new thang ...
Lots of third party companies have iPod accessories, including these and these.
