The Hobbit Hole XXV - Fare you well! Fare you well!
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 10/15/2005 7:13:08 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Fare you well! Fare you well!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

It's still a thing about autumn I miss; raking the leaves to side of the road and burning them. sigh. crisp sunny afternoons and acrid smell of smoke tendriling its way throughout the neighborhood. so many years ago...

My aunt lives near a small town that still allows leaf burning. Driving through town a couple of years ago, I got a whiff of burning leaves, and this overpowering sense of loss at what liberals have taken away from us city dwellers.

I picked up a copy in an airport for a flight a while back. It had been ages. Now I am about half way through a reread of LOTR.

9800 and calling it a night. I need to think a little on what comes next. Only a couple hundred from being on track though.

You scored as Maximus. After his family was murdered by the evil emperor Commodus, the great Roman general Maximus went into hiding to avoid Commodus's assassins. He became a gladiator, hoping to dominate the colosseum in order to one day get the chance of killing Commodus. Maximus is valiant, courageous, and dedicated. He wants nothing more than the chance to avenge his family, but his temper often gets the better of him.

I took the quiz four times, with Maxiumus coming out on top, and the others in varying percentages. The top four alternates all clustered closely together, with an abrupt fall-off for everyone else.

I guess it was more of "which super hero I am not".

Michael Crichton, State of Fear.

It finally came out in paperback.

Good Night.

I had a tie-breaker question. If I chose rum and beach over family, I came out as Captain Jack Sparrow.

I took a few more tests. Most of the ones seem to be variations on "r u punk/goth?", or some other obscure cultural refference. The best tests seem to be the ones with lots of questions, lots of degrees of answer, and lots of different results. Here's a few that I felt had some validity for me:

You scored as Army. You are an Army of one, you believe in American Traditions & values. Call your local recruiter today.

Army

85%

Marines

65%

Navy

55%

what military branch are you?
created with QuizFarm.com

I guess Air Force was not part of the equation.

You scored as Soldier. You are a soldier a vital link to this army. because of you our men survive firefights and are army is kept strong.

Soldier

93%

Special ops

71%

Officer

71%

What military rank are you?
created with QuizFarm.com

My Senior Drill Sergeant asked me (after hours) to go OCS. During the day, he was screaming in my face because I have two left feet. I could make an entire company look bad at D&C. OTOH, he recognized my unconventional talents, when he "loaned me out" to Delta company to help GI their mess hall before the IG. This was in response to Delta screwing with our scores on the qualifying range. Their mess hall flunked badly after I got done "helping" them.

You scored as Arabian. Your an arabian!! You are the swift and powerful beauty your special!!

Arabian

69%

Paint Horse

63%

Quarter Horse

63%

Fresian

56%

Mustang

31%

What horse are you?
created with QuizFarm.com

Even after discounting "good looks", I came out as an Arabian. After all, there's still brains and personality, which that breed has plenty of.

When Clare and I went to FL on Friday for the weekend, we rented a Saturn VUE. It was a fun little car to drive! I'd made reservations with Alamo for a midsize car, and when we went outside and the man showed us what was available, there were only two sedans, and then he said the VUE was available, too! We were really excited!

Been reading it in small bites. It's on a par with his other work.

What I really like about it is its skewering of enviroweenies, and the fact that real enviroweenies are havng assorted cattle over it.
