The Hobbit Hole XXV - Fare you well! Fare you well!
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 10/15/2005 7:13:08 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Fare you well! Fare you well!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

What does the official item list look like? I need to note that down or something.

I've got a toaster and an aloe. The toaster reference will be obscure, but there. The aloe is going to be a bit macabre - the sad victim of a mad genetic scientist.

Others have been bantering around ninjas and llamas and badgers and Guido and I'm all confused.

Heck, I'll try to use anything... well almost anything... so sure, I can make Guido an item.

Do llamas work as Amazonian pack animals?

I don't think I can get aloe in there since I am on an entirely alien planet with nothing earth related at all. A toaster should not be too hard.

I think they're better on rocky mountain trails (like Peru) than the rain forest floor.

Will your llamas spit?

But you're on a different planet, so the words can mean something different.

"Captain Aloe, what say we head over to the Crusty Toaster, pick up a couple of aloes and a six-pack of llamas and spend the day at the Guido smoking pawnshops..."

Of course! Llamas like spitting.

1067 words. I'm starting with an action sequence, no dialogue at all, so it's hard.

I decided to start with the assassination instead of the press conference. It's kind of action-y. There will, however, be a recap of the scene later on, from the villian's POV because he was involved even though it's not apparant in the beginning.

Does a move from New Orleans to Hattiesburg sound plausible for a "Guido?" Suzi?

Sure does! My Grandaddy moved from New Orleans to Hattiesburg. He wasn't a Guido, he was a Marion, but he was definitely Italian. His Mama was a Scalia.

My Mama met Antonin Scalia once at a talk he gave at Southern Miss, and they compared notes and found out his family was from the same village as my great grandparents! Never found out if we were actually related, though.

Does it count as action if it's sneaking?

Guido the mortician it is then.

However, I don't think that "Guido's Funeral Parlor, Pasta House and Social Emporium" is the best name for his business.

Definately, because sneaking is suspenseful. You could get caught - or almost caught - while sneaking.

I got a couple hundred in over lunch but I am still only in the high 600's. It was a slow part setting up the prison break scene. Now I just need to figure out how much suspense to have before the commandos crash the place.
