The Hobbit Hole XXV - Fare you well! Fare you well!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Fare you well! Fare you well!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Funny how when you use a multi window spam, even in order, the TCP delay will sometimes post them out of order.

That was bad. Not sneaky at all. 0 points for style but full marks for actually getting it.

I saw that book mentioned the other day. I'm going to have to get it. What's funny, though, I'd never been to a Dead Spread, or even known that's what they were called, before we moved here to MA. I didn't even go into a funeral home until I was almost a teenager, and a friend's father died. Then I didn't go in again until my Daddy died over 10 yrs. later. We just hadn't had any deaths in the family. I do remember people coming over to our house, and bringing food, but there wasn't any sort of meal at the Church or anything. When Mama died, the Bereavement Committee had a full dinner for our family and friends. It was vey nice.

Then my dad JUST ROARED with laughter.

That's a good sign!

With both my parents being the youngest children in large families and me being the (next to) youngest of our first cousins, I started my funeral-in a long time ago.

When my dad died, I had to fly in from Michigan where I was on tour with a group from college. When I got home, probably around 8-9 at night. Women from the church were there and probably had been most of the day, cooking, cleaning, etc. They made sure no one forgot to eat.

I've seen my mom and aunts perform the same ritual for others.

When we lived in DC, the grandfather of a Korean friend of ours passed away (I think I've mentioned the Korean Catholic funeral). Mrs. baked a cake and they didn't know quite how to receive it.

It was not unlike that scene in MBFGW, but in a Korean kind of way...

Yeah.

Dad and I have been slowly patching things up and we get along pretty good. he emails me pretty frequently and keeps up with what's going on in our lives. It was my dad that gave me the freezer.

Truer words were never spoken when you said he was caught in the middle. But like it says in LOTR, he's in a cleft stick of his own making.

I told him when he left that he could always come back and I'd take care of him till the end of his days.

Oh great. Funeral flower arrangements at a wedding. Kinda sends the wrong message.

It'd work okay if someone there speaks out with a good reason why the couple shouldn't get married.

It could be a shotgun weddin' that didn't go as planned.

Or maybe it did...

I ain't having a shotgun wedding so I don't care about the etiquette. As to the speaking up with a good reason, well... isn't that why there's a best man? To kick out anyone who tries things like that?
