The Hobbit Hole XXV - Fare you well! Fare you well!
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 10/15/2005 7:13:08 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Fare you well! Fare you well!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Ugh, I don't know what to think about Ginger...I don't know how to handle that!

Hmmm... I don't have a nice warm fuzzy about Ginger's career in the dog bidness...

Man, I hope you're right, then I won't feel so bad about handing her off to someone. We've never had a chewer...at least not like this. She has toys to chew on, but prefered my dog bed. It's mostly the chickens that we're worried about. I don't think we'll be able to train her out of it. We got the shock collar but it in no way deters her. Maybe she's first born?

The lady who brought her here says she'll take her back, but I hate to give a dog like this to someone else. Maybe if she could be an indoor dog or if someone had a fence to keep her in.

IMHO, most dogs are chicken killers, most dig at some point, at least as pups, and most dog owners should have a fence... So those faults don't sound like deal breakers at all in the right home.

On the bright side, I got a great leather coat for $25 at the used clothing store. G'nad really likes it. :-)

Mrs. Nad... every pup I've ever had has gone through a chewing and digging faze. Gidget would repeatedly pull the stuffing out of her blankets. They're monsters until they are about a year old. All of them :~D

Woohoo! don't you love a good deal?

Did you see where I got a nice knit white long-sleeved shirt at a garage sale for 25 cents? Had brown armpit stains but I bleached 'em out and it looks like new!

I bleached it so hard I thought it might disintegrate...but it didn't. No tacky germs could live through it though. Ha!

I don't think I ever cried so hard at the end of a movie as I did at Dr. Zhivago. Freaked out my date, I can tell ya!

I agree...most dogs are chicken killers...unless you get the right breed...and we can't afford that. The ground that we sit on is all rock, so a fence is out. We talked about an electric fence but because she isn't bothered by the shock from the training collar, she'd probably run right through it. I don't mind the digging or the chewing really...it's the constand running after the chickens that we can't get past. So, I suggest a home with no chickens.

You're probably right about that. If she's hot on chickens, she won't stop, it's too much fun.

Would they come and get her soon, or might you have to keep her for awhile?

Nah, I don't think you'll have to go anywhere.

Talk to your recruiter tomorrow, and see what she has to say ... they probably have something else lined up, or will, when you tell them you need it. Remember, when you make money, they make money ... it's in their best interests to keep you gainfully employed.

Meanwhile, on your lunch break tomorrow, call the college! Schedule an interview, if you can; if you can't work the interview into your schedule, make sure your name is still in the hopper. The absolute worst thing they can say is "No, Ms. Cotton."

When I was a kid we had a first-order field dog, a lab named "Chip". Born to hunt birds. A natural.

My dad tried a couple of years of raising pheasant. It was an Oregon (where we lived back then) Department of Game program where they'd give you pheasant eggs and show you how to make an incubator, and raise them from chicks and all that... neat program... the deal was when they were old enough you'd take them out and release them somewhere to support the game bird population.

Well... it turned out that the wire pen full of juvenile pheasant was simply more than Chip could take. He got into the pen more than once... and the last time he got in there he killed every single last one of them.

Born hunter he was. And good at it. There was just too much born hunter in him, and no way to reconcile it with "please don't kill ~these~ birds". :-)

So... we quit with the pheasant and kept the dog. Your milage may vary. :-)

She really does seem to enjoy the chase. Vader runs along with her but during the day, if we keep Ginger in the pen, Vader hangs out at the front door. The guineas come within three feet of her and she just looks at them. We are in hopes that she hasn't picked it up from sis yet. She'll either come by friday or Ginger will go to the pound. She'll probably come and pick her up though...I really don't want to take her to the pound.

Yea, we've thought about getting rid of the birds. We like the eggs and the guineas are great at eating the ticks and chiggers though. She's a hunter too...she'd probably be the first one to tango with the snakes around here. I just want to find her a good home.

I'm off to bed too...night all.
