Episode 4 of Season 4 of The Apprentice is on tonight. I'm a little late in starting a discussion thread, but I'm enjoying this set of contestants more than those from the Season 2 and 3, so here goes.
Randal LIED. When asked about a plan 'B' Randal said he was putting it in play.? Her NEVER had a plan 'B'. He turned nasty street punk last night. He denied Trump the opportunity to hire Rebecca.? Without a 'helping' hand Randal would not be a success today. Wrong Call!
He still outperformed Rebecca. Now, I am still of two minds about the whole 'becca denial' part, but that is a totally different aspect (actually I would have acted differently, but that's me). When it comes to the entire thing Randal won this thing ....in fact I was wondering what those teams were wondering when they always selected him (didn't they realize that all they were doing is making Trump perceive Randal as a performer? And if I remember correctly they did the same thing in the 2nd series when the teams would always select Kelly when given the option).
Anyways .....what he did AFTER he won is open to debate, but Randal beat Rebecca.
BTW, what do you mean when you say 'Without a 'helping' hand Randal would not be a success today.' Are you insinuating that Randal wouldn't have been a success in life without 'help', or do you mean that he required teamwork during the Apprentice to win?
If it is the latter I completely agree (in fact every person who has ever won the apprentice, or come close, required teamwork ....especially in the latter rounds. Injudicious team selection, or just plain ol' Murphy messing things up, can spell disaster). However if you mean the former, and in particular if you mean that he couldn't have made it without a 'helping hand' (whatever you mean by that), that is rather off.
Actually it reminds me of a situation that happened to me. Before I got my analyst position I started in a far far lower position (at the same firm), doing tasks that to be honest could be performed just as well by a trained macaque. In essence the position was rife with ennui, and at best was just a way to bring in a check at the end of the month. Hence by the end of the first month I was tired, and hence I decided to use my skills to do a firm-wide analysis whereby I basically penned a comprehensive analysis of the various facets that were pertinent to the core-competencies of the firm, and then came up with several stratagems that would enable the firm to achieve its goals as well as tap into new opportunities. I stayed up late for a good number of days doing the analysis, and once everything was finished I printed several copies and mailed them to several vice-presidents in the firm.
The very same day (after I sent the stuff) I got an email from one, a call from another, and one sent an assistant to talk to me. They basically poached me from the drab department I was in, and in fact tried to one-up each other with offers. Thus in just over a month I went from a paper-pusher to being one of the key analysts under one of the VPs.
A month or so after that I decided to take further initiative and came up with a pricing engine that basically eliminated an entire range of steps plus augmented the in-house hedging system. This allowed significant gains in profit to be accrued. Again I was promoted to where I actually started showing up in the firm hierarchy (the youngest ever to get where I was).
Now, what is the point in all this? Well, a short-time later this dude in my former department (the very first one) bumps into me and asks me out for lunch. I agree. After some chitchat and whatnot he then proceeds to ask if I think I got where I am because I had a helping hand (he then went further to explain what he meant, and in a nutshell he implied that my skin color had everything to do with it).
Ive never laughed so hard .i almost throttled myself! This was a guy who had been asking me why I was staying up so late (when I was doing the project I would leave work many times after 9pm while he was always in around 8.14am and out 4.46pm to beat the clock) and why I wouldnt go to the parties he threw, and now he was wondering why I was where I was and he was where he was (and if my skin had to do with it). I found that so hilarious .still do, especially since the only helping hand I had was from God. However that dude just couldnt get it that not everyone gets where they are due to affirmative action. I know there are many who have, but personally I would take such a program as an insult. A straight unadulterated insult.
Anyways, that is why I found the whole helping hand comment funny. Randal seems as if he has achieved a whole lot. True, I am sure there are those who might claim that he became a Rhodes scholar due to his skin, or he got into MIT due to race etc etc etc ..however I wonder how they would explain his performance there? Or were his professors giving him affirmative action grades and awards.
Sometimes the only helping hand a person has is the one he/she gives himself.
No--he worked hard, 13 weeks for the job.....he didn't have to share it. Besides, being put on the spot like that, by the Donald, was the Donald's way of saying, always watch your back!
Randy is a great guy---I knew him when he was in high school....and he deserves this honor. He doesn't have to share it with anyone!!!! He gave his team credit for helping and was a friend to Rebecca...but he didn't have to share his great accomplishment!!!!
As to Randal's decision, I think he made the right one. She may be a firecracker and solid as a rock, but while he has time and time again expressed respect for her, I don't think he thought she had what it took. And how the question was phrased, "if you were me, would you hire her as well?" I think he not only answered it properly, but exactly how Trump felt. He wanted to be convinced, yes, but the name of the game is The Apprentice, and that was what he got
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT......110%!!!!!
Randal won. That's clear. Everyone knows that Randal won and is the Apprentice. Rebecca is just the runner-up. She wasn't as good.
Next question: Could the Trump organization benefit from having Rebecca on the payroll? Would anyone say "No, she'd be a disaster"? She's a fine woman and better than many employees of the Trump organization.
"Randal, if you were me, would you hire Rebecca?"
Randal wasn't going to lose anything. And Rebecca wasn't going to be his equal. She was the loser. But being unwilling to hire such an outstanding performer makes Randal look foolish and petty.

Exactly.
Again, Randle LIED. He tried to make it sound like he had a plan 'B'. In the past, when someone was caught in a lie, "YOUR FIRED".

LATTER.
I don't think it's fair to say that Randal lied. That's too strong. He was rationalizing and seeing his own actions through rose-colored glasses. Completely human. I don't think it's the same as lying. Let me explain:
Randal had a plan: hold the event outside.
It rained and ruined the plan that Randal had.
Randal thought quickly, moved everything inside and carried off the event in good style.
You could label the first approach Plan A and the second approach Plan B. I'm sure that's how Randal sees them.
Now, it's better to have Plan B written out and agreed to prior to needing it. Making it up on-the-fly is not exactly what many people would see as a real Plan B, but I don't think it's lying to call the resulting approach "My Plan B".
Look at it this way: Some people fold when their plan falls apart. "It's raining? I'm sunk! Game over, man!" Randal didn't do that. His plan fell apart and so he came up with a second plan. I give him credit for doing that.
Last point: If Randal has a weakeness, it may be relying on his ability to fly by the seat of his pants. He's very good at that. That's a good thing. But it may lead him into insufficient upfront planning (formulating Plan B prior to needing Plan B is a good thing and I haven't see Randal place much emphasis on that).
I think that The Donald was unfair to Randy by asking him that question while he was in the midst of getting the congrats of all his fellow contestants and such. He was entitled to his moment of glory....not to be undermined like that.
He earned that time in the limelight---he didn't have to share it with anyone.
That question couldn't be answered with a yes or no----it could have been, I'd hire her to work for me!!
I will ask him about it when I see him.
He won (((Hugs)))
And same back to you!!
Thanks!
BB

They say we learn by our mistakes. You can be sure he'll never make that mistake again.
That's why he has to have good people around him....and he works so well with all sorts of people.
I received an e-mail from Raj that he's running for congress in Pa.'s 13 district.
No, he said he didn't have a plan 'B'...remeber? When asked about a plan 'B' he said he was putting it in play and really was losing it. I also think Rebecca should have told Yahoo to stick it. How the hell can you have a fundraiser and not be allowed to solicit cash? I did feel as though Randel used negitive campaigning to win. I thought Trump would see through Randel and his line of BS.
Raj????
I agree that he earned what he won, and he does not HAVE to share it. My point is just that he wouldn't actually be "sharing it" if he brought Rebecca along. He would still be the king apprentice and get the benefit of looking like a hero.
Did you really know him in high school? Please dish. I swear I'm not writing a book or anything. :)
Randle was NO where in sight during the field set-up. The major sponser of the event was very unhappy, remember? They held an auction in the locker room....THE LOCKER ROOM. No backup plan at all. Rebecca is 23 and would have made the ideal apprentice in my opinion. Randle, at times, became a punk at the end. I was shocked that Trump picked him. And a personal remark, when they showed Randle's Co. not one Hispanic, White, Oriental. Only African-American. Should that bother anyone? Should that play in the decision? No, just an observation.

And Rebecca picked the Condo project, they would have been working at different locations. He looked like a fool when he said no. The crowd even booed.
