No Hangovers for Two Years! [Now 3 Years!]
self | October 8, 2005 | RobFromGa

Posted on 10/08/2005 7:33:57 AM PDT by RobFromGa

October 8, 2003 is the date that I quit drinking for good. It has been a great two years!

When I was drinking, I thought that life would be impossibly boring without alcohol. How can you enjoy parties, football games, vacations, weekends, etc without alcohol? I found out that not only is it possible to enjoy these things, that in many ways they are made better without the "buzz".

I haven't had a hangover in two years and that is a blessing.

I have occasionally had brief thoughts that I might be able to drink normally now that I have controlled myself for this length of time. But I understand myself better now. The fact that I would even consider such a question and action even for a millisecond is a sign of my lack of control over alcohol. My only sane solution is to keep it out of my body.

I urge anyone who suspects that they may have a drinking problem to find help and deal with the issue. I wish I had quit when I was 30 instead of 41.

Almost a year ago, I posted a thread on FR, If You Suspect You Might Have A Drinking Problem (An Open Letter). There might be some help there for you if you are trying to quit.

Thanks to all who have helped me to quit and to stay sober.

Yeah, I do it similar in that I have two different ones. First is either a blond, wheat or abby ale, second is a porter (Grants, Fullers, or Anchor) We can no longer get Black Jack Porter [Left Hand Brewing Co] in this area, sadly.

But I can truthfully say that I enjoy beer much more now than in my younger days when quantity was the first priority.

" I was also addicted to alcohol for a couple years. I realized where I was heading and altered my behavior. I have not bragged about it."

You might want to take a look at post #31 and reconsider.

LOL It's 19 years not 20!! I just mentioned to my wife after posting, that it was hard to believe 20 years has gone by, and she said, "Dear, it's 19 years". She's right, and here all along I thought I was going into my 20th this year. I'm embarassed!! :-0 Don't know how the heck I had it figured that it was 20, must be some residual dain bramage or ego? lol My apologies.

Anyway, thats just another reason to stop before it affects your brain!! Congrats to all who have acknowledged their problem and are doing something about it.

Has anyone considered what everyone not drinking would encompass....prostitution in a scale not seen since the days of "I love you too much GI, give me money" in a country. There is just too much at stake to risk downplaying the importance of getting laid without alcohol...imagine for a moment if young folks went to an ice cream parlor to do their mating dances instead of beer joints...and you think the country has a weight problem now...sheesh.

That's awesome. I quit drugs instantly (I got born again) when I was 22. The freedom is overwhelming!

We have our disagreements about the fair tax, but I'm genuinely happy for you. Be blessed!

Do you notice how the replies here go from one extreme
to the other?

From the ones who understand that some people can drink responsibly and that some people can't.
From those who know the destruction alcohol can cause
and those who don't or don't care.

From those who are extremely proud of you for your
accomplishment and those who are in denial and most likely
are alcoholic themselves but refuse to admit it.
(The old I can quit when I want to I just don't want to. crowd)

Please pay no attention to the #2 crowd.
And be proud of what you have done and will continue to do.
May God Bless you Rob, I for one know where you are coming
from and where you are going.

"I have had four people in the last year that have told me that they quit for good after reading my post of last Dec. Many more have discussed this with me."

Where is the link to your article of last year? It is in the archives; and is worthy of a reposting. Add an undate. If it was of assistance to others before ... it will be again.

Nothing like a personal experience of one person to wake up another.

Great decision ... you will have a better life and health, and probably more years to enjoy.
