October 8, 2003 is the date that I quit drinking for good. It has been a great two years!
When I was drinking, I thought that life would be impossibly boring without alcohol. How can you enjoy parties, football games, vacations, weekends, etc without alcohol? I found out that not only is it possible to enjoy these things, that in many ways they are made better without the "buzz".
I haven't had a hangover in two years and that is a blessing.
I have occasionally had brief thoughts that I might be able to drink normally now that I have controlled myself for this length of time. But I understand myself better now. The fact that I would even consider such a question and action even for a millisecond is a sign of my lack of control over alcohol. My only sane solution is to keep it out of my body.
I urge anyone who suspects that they may have a drinking problem to find help and deal with the issue. I wish I had quit when I was 30 instead of 41.
Almost a year ago, I posted a thread on FR, If You Suspect You Might Have A Drinking Problem (An Open Letter). There might be some help there for you if you are trying to quit.
Thanks to all who have helped me to quit and to stay sober.
29 years next month (but who's counting) and I couldn't be happier about it. I love my sanity. Congratulations Rob, it gets even better.
I am so glad to hear that you are doing well, Siouxz!
Ten months is a great accomplishment and I hope that you are experiencing positive results from your decision to quit.
Thanks for your positive statements on these threads, they mean a lot, and you are an example of what these threads are intended to accomplish-- to help someone who is looking to start "thinking" about alcohol.

I'm looking forward to proving that for myself. Kudos to you on 29 years (but who's counting).

Now she is abusing herself.
Shoulda stayed married to the lesser of the two evils.
Ditto on your side note.
Some of us just quit. Period.
I will say my alcohol consumption has dropped way down from what it was. I am now a cheap drunk too. Any more than 2 or 3 beers and I had better be at home or in a sleep over friendly environment. Im not about to try driving anywhere.
WOW! I havent had a drink in X years!
WOW! Are you still drinking, smoking, etc. etc.? I am so much better than you because I quit.
It gets tiring after awhile.
I remember you post back then, I followed suit.
Did so for longevity/health before problems set in.
It was the next step since I had changed everything else about my diet in the years prior.
Now all I have is the Air that I breath and that is a great thing.
My routine is to have one bottle of Bud Select followed by one draft Sam Adams.
Live and let live.
Better to control it too soon than too late. Thanks for your story...
xcamel: It's always good to hear from 'ol timers' ;-), it sends a message that it can be done. I'll be 20 years this Monday 10/10, thanks to God and AA early on.
RobFromGa: Your message will reach the eyes and ears of those ready to listen, and if we didn't have people willing to talk about it then no one would know that staying sober is quite possible and the rewards immense.
I remember in the first couple years how great it felt just to be able to get a good night's sleep without all the agitation, sickness and dread of the morning.
Yours is a good message Rob, there are always alternatives that may work and people should know about them, though for myself AA was crucial in the beginning.
Thanks again for posting.
Would love to see TexasCowboy post as well..
There was a time I was addicted to morphine based pain killers. I was also addicted to alcohol for a couple years. I realized where I was heading and altered my behavior. I have not bragged about it. I did not look for sympathy.
I'd like to understand why you would think this is an appropriate comment to make on this thread? What point are you trying to make?
Would love to see TexasCowboy post as well..
Happy belated bithday, TC! (oct 7)
Congratulations, Rob, and thanks for this very uplifting and fun thread. I'm a rare poster; it takes something special to bring me out of the shadows. I remember those invigorating first two years of sobriety and (almost) envy you your 'newness'! Keep on trudgin'.
Mayor... I usually tell people "I exceeded my lifetime quota waaaaaaaay too soon." They get a chuckle out of that too. On my 24th anniversary of sobriety - Sept 6, '05 - I was morphined up in emergency, just vaguely aware that my much-anticipated cruise to Alaska was leaving without me. Life beyond your wildest dreams...HA! ;-)
CONGRATS on the efforts FRiend.
Thanks, SB - Congrats to you too!
