October 8, 2003 is the date that I quit drinking for good. It has been a great two years!
When I was drinking, I thought that life would be impossibly boring without alcohol. How can you enjoy parties, football games, vacations, weekends, etc without alcohol? I found out that not only is it possible to enjoy these things, that in many ways they are made better without the "buzz".
I haven't had a hangover in two years and that is a blessing.
I have occasionally had brief thoughts that I might be able to drink normally now that I have controlled myself for this length of time. But I understand myself better now. The fact that I would even consider such a question and action even for a millisecond is a sign of my lack of control over alcohol. My only sane solution is to keep it out of my body.
I urge anyone who suspects that they may have a drinking problem to find help and deal with the issue. I wish I had quit when I was 30 instead of 41.
Almost a year ago, I posted a thread on FR, If You Suspect You Might Have A Drinking Problem (An Open Letter). There might be some help there for you if you are trying to quit.
Thanks to all who have helped me to quit and to stay sober.
If you want a Google GMail account, FReepmail me.
They're going fast!
Generally, I ignore evangelical abstentionists, but you seem like a nice guy, so good luck and keep up your spirits.
I sit corrected (But I said "rarely")
I'm 23 days short of 20 years - still betting none of the local groups have one of these:
Good post and Congratulations! Drinking is so pervasive in our culture and one has to wonder: How much is too much? Thanks for giving many of us something to think about.
*chorus of voices* -- "Hi, Rob ..."
Congratulations, Rob ... keep it up (one day at a time, as they say!)
WTG.
Working on my tenth year of sobriety.
(Note: This in not an endorsement of AA. I am very skeptical of AA, though it clearly is the best choice for many people.)
And yes, xrp, this is breaking news!
I havent had a hangover in well over 20 years. I havent quit drinking either in fact, Ill be heading down to my favorite watering hole shortly.
Rob, doesn't it feel great to be in control? Congratulations!
Congratulations!
re humility
I don't credit AA with my sobriety. I made the decision to quit on my own and did it. Others have helped me to learn more about the problem and to them I am eternally grateful.
I am trying to help others who, like myself, wonder if they have a drinking problem and what to do about it.
I have had four people in the last year that have told me that they quit for good after reading my post of last Dec. Many more have discussed this with me.
I am humble about my problem, and just trying to help others. If that offends you, you are not one of the people I am talking to.
I personally thank you for your post RobfromGa. Addiction is still a big issue in the USA and it is still the "pink elephant sitting in the living room" that no one in the family wants to talk about. While at the same time many do talk about it and address the issue the drug alcohol is still seen as a more acceptable form of drug addiction.
AA wasn't for me. A support system was never going to work for me. I know myself pretty well and knew that I had to pit my stubborn nature against my addiction and had a battle royale within myself.
He deserves one! Congrats, Rob!!! Still sober myself after your original thread got me to thinking. I'm coming up on 10 months now. Thank you.
Congratulations! It takes a big person to own up to this problem.
I didn't put it in news, and this isn't really about me. Actually, I am not looking for congratulations, I am trying to attract people who might have a drinking problem and be wondering what to do about it.
I agree that other people's reformations are not usually very interesting. But in that rare case where you need it, it can change your life.
OUTSTANDING !
