No Hangovers for Two Years! [Now 3 Years!]
self | October 8, 2005 | RobFromGa

Posted on 10/08/2005 7:33:57 AM PDT by RobFromGa

October 8, 2003 is the date that I quit drinking for good. It has been a great two years!

When I was drinking, I thought that life would be impossibly boring without alcohol. How can you enjoy parties, football games, vacations, weekends, etc without alcohol? I found out that not only is it possible to enjoy these things, that in many ways they are made better without the "buzz".

I haven't had a hangover in two years and that is a blessing.

I have occasionally had brief thoughts that I might be able to drink normally now that I have controlled myself for this length of time. But I understand myself better now. The fact that I would even consider such a question and action even for a millisecond is a sign of my lack of control over alcohol. My only sane solution is to keep it out of my body.

I urge anyone who suspects that they may have a drinking problem to find help and deal with the issue. I wish I had quit when I was 30 instead of 41.

Almost a year ago, I posted a thread on FR, If You Suspect You Might Have A Drinking Problem (An Open Letter). There might be some help there for you if you are trying to quit.

Thanks to all who have helped me to quit and to stay sober.

Cowering from a problem is far easier than mastering it. The rats do it all the time.

I congratulate you on your perfection. BTW, cowering is the last thing I would call it. Recovering alcoholics are facing one of the toughest challenges in our lives, addiction, on a daily basis. And we are overcoming it. We have newfound respect for ourselves and others, and many times are able to mend relationships and bodies that we have abused for years. We know a potential slip-up is always around the corner, yet we persevere in our sobriety. Yeah, we're real moral weaklings.

congrats on ten years, I don't plan to backslide and appreciate the "secret". Whats a Mosin/Nagant? (I know I could ask google and knwo quicker than typing this, but thought it might be more interesting coming from you)

Where's your humility, Dude?

Sobriety is to be celebrated. I have been sober for coming up on 9 years. Its humility that got me this far. Because to me, humility is accepting that drugs and alcohol are far more powerful than I am. And that Im truly pwerless in their presence. But go ahead and ponder the poster's humility's whereabouts if it makes you feel better...

I don't have a problem with alcohol.... I have problems without alcohol!

Alcohol. The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems.

thanks for sharing your experience. I quit on my own, cold turkey. About a month later, I saw a number of methods for quitting (other than AA) including Rational Recovery Rational Recovery website which did help me to recognize the Addictive Voice inside my head who was encouraging me to "give in and drink". This recognition was a very valuable trick to me as I learned to quiet that internal voice.

After about three months, I went to AA and it helped in some ways too.

There is no program for everyone, some will need AA to quit. I say whatever works for you.

Great job on quitting, it sounds like we have similar experiences with quitting.

Congratulations.

I will point out, however, that most beer hangovers are caused by the preservatives in the beer and vitamin B poverty, NOT the alcohol.

Don't reserve judgment. There are those in the "misery loves company" camp who will try and keep you down, and you have to acknowledge they exist.

Hang in there....

Excellent question

we decided life is better without it. By the way, good for you.

Way to go. It's been 6 1/3 years since I had a hangover(or vomited).

Way to go. Two years is big deal (for some of us anyway).

But as my sponsor would say, "my twelve year old daughter could have done that."
