At this point its all speculation. But given what google did with 'google earth' you can buy a standalone app for your desktop, you can buy a server, or you can run web based. I would guess the office product will be the same way.

Imagine only having to maintain a couple of clustered intranet servers to maintain the office suite for a mid sized company. Its the next best think to dumb workstations booting off of terminal servers... 1980's here we come ;)

Why imagine it? It can already be done with Office suites running under *nix. Other than just entering another application into the market, I fail to see what Google is doing here.

Which is of course exactly why I don't see this taking off. The world moved away from this model of computing for a reason (largely because it sucked). I know they've been predicting a return to it under various names for a while, but the fact that they keep having to change the name to maintain any level of buzz shows just how little movement towards it there really is.
