Word For The Day, Tuesday, October 3, 2005,
10/03/05 | Slip 18

Posted on 10/04/2005 5:46:47 AM PDT by Slip18

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today.

The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. I’m just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words “as if” can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.

CONURBATION

Noun:

1) An aggregation or continuous network of urban communities [syn: urban sprawl]

Pronounced: Con/ur/bae/shun

Etymology: I have no clue

Good Morning, Class. Welcome to School!

RULES: You must use the WFTD in a sentence for an A. For a + after your “A,” you must bring in a link of the word usage or something funny, a poem or some prose that will elucidate the word for us. If you need to know how to link, come to the Subbie’s desk in the front of the class.

MissBuns - that is hilarious - Is a sheriff autonomous in Virginia like they are in Texas? There is very little oversight here - we had a crooked Sheriff for years - finally voted him out of office and the new guy immediately had the FBI in to arrest him - still his supporters couldn't believe he had done all the things he was convicted of doing............

I honestly have no idea.

I only know that unlike in Delaware where the sheriff only serves summonses and conducts tax sales, the sheriff's department is actually the County police force.

The Sheriff in Texas is the head of a County Police force - they only have jurisdiction outside of the city limits, unless assistance is requested by the Police Department.

So if you live outside the city limits and have a problem, you call on the Sheriff - big county, small force, you may or may not get help.

One year the Chief of Police ran against the Sheriff, and the Sheriff (the criminal one) had one of his guys park his car in front of the Chief's home all day to intimidate his wife. We were involved in the campaigning for the Chief and I honestly can tell you I was scared. The sheriff had a lot to lose and didn't. We had to deal with him for another term until a retired State Trooper ran against him. He is the one who had the FBI in immediately after the election and the former sheriff ended up getting a deal - 18 months in a federal prison - a country club kind of place.

Well, I am always happy when I hear from Slip... and the happy gas always seems to create greater bliss between us.

And the keys were found in the front door, where they hung out all night.

Same here, at least in this county.........but there are very few town police departments around here, maybe 5?...the vast majority of folks in this county have to rely on the Sheriff or the State Police.

A scientist from Texas A&M University invented a bra that keeps women's breasts from jiggling while preventing the nipples from pushing through the fabric when cold weather sets in.

At a news conference announcing the invention, a large group of men took the scientist outside and kicked the crap out of him.

One day, a man came home and was greeted by his wife dressed in a very sexy nightie. "Tie me up," she purred, "and you can do anything you want."

So he tied her up and went golfing.

Fifty-one years ago, Herman James, a North Carolina mountain man, was drafted by the Army. On his first day in basic training, the Army issued him a comb. That afternoon the Army barber sheared off all his hair.

On his second day, the Army issued Herman a toothbrush. That afternoon the Army dentist yanked seven of his teeth.

On the third day, the Army issued him a jock strap. The Army has been looking for Herman for 51 years.

Good day, Miss Slip:

If Conurbation is the answer
Then it must be a stupid question
Does anyone else suffer poor digestion
When seeing Artists' Concepts of future burgs and towns?

Oh, they look so pretty, Yessiree!
Sprouting up and all around
So put your money down
They'll stick you in a shoe box for a modest fee

But, where is the farm, so essential to feed you?
Or the smooth flowing highway to speed you
Off to work in a skyscraper downtown?

Utopian communities are just liberal masturbation
Like Mass Transit for the Birkenstock congregation
People need space and for their bucks there is no bang

Call me old fashioned, you'd get no argumentation
I like Sci-Fi, but there's always Sturm und Drang
Even in the Elitist epic, "Metropolis" by Fritz Lang.
