Stupid vanity of mine. Any freepers in the medical field?
10/2/05 | self

I've been feeling a little pain in my left hand when I make a fist or move it certain ways the last week or so. Dismissed it as part of getting old.

Just now, I've discovered the source of my annoying pain. It's about 3 inches above the middle point between my index and middle finger toward my wrist and there's a semi hard lump about the size of a dime in diameter and about 3/8" in height. When I press it, it sends a little pain down to my middle and ring finger.

Oh sure, I will surely be ridiculed. Go ahead, make fun of me, freepers and others. I am going to call my doctor in the morning and make an appointment, but in the mean time, it would be nice to get some input from my online friends who are in the medical field. Yes I am scared upon discovering a lump and shamelessly soliciting free advice.

Whomever responds sincerely, I thank you in advance.

If you can feel your pulse on the "lump", its probably just an aneurysm. I had one from a baseball injury, and had surgury to repair it.

I'm not a medical person, but have said a prayer.

I hope it turns out to be something minor.

Good luck!

They used to treat them by smacking them with a bible!

I know.

Used to be a "treat yourself remedy" once diagnosed.

Now they tell you to see a doctor....who smacks it will a book, and charges you $50 for the visit, LOL!

Can't feel any pulse from it. Thanks for your input. I know my doctor will perform all the tests, but it might be a while before I get any idea what this thing is. So that's why I posted this vanity.

Thank you. I will check it out.

A few weeks ago, I was trimming sheetrock around a window and I placed my left hand below the projectile of the knife like a stupid would. The wound healed nicely and I forgot about that.

You might have a point. Thank you.

If it is a ganglion cyst, the way I used to treat those was to cleanse and numb the area, and then use a big honking needle to draw the gel out of the cyst, because it's too thick to come through a slender one.

Then I'd aseptically change the syringe to one with a touch of Celestone (a cortisone liquid) diluted in xylocaine and inject the cortisone into the deflated sac of the cyst to sooth the inflamation that caused the cyst and get it to stick together so it wouldn't refill.

That seemed to take care of practically all of them.

Don't pay for an expensive operation to remove the cyst unless this aspiration and injection treatment fails.

Some symptoms do sound similar but not most of it. However, thank you for your concern. I appreciate it.

As a few others mentioned, it sounds like a ganglion cyst. They are harmless, and can spontaneously disappear, especially if it is smacked hard. It can be surgically removed if it's interfering with your activities of daily living. Be sure to see your doctor anyway -- the web is no place to get a definitive medical diagnosis.

Well then, smack ME with a bible too if it works! I sin everyday and I still ask for His forgiveness like a brat child that I am.
