Okay, just walked in the door from watching "Serenity". I walked in to the theater prepared to be dissapointed- and, man, was I NOT dissapointed! In point of fact, it blew me away!
Now as in any movie, there are plot points and physics (especially the physics in this one!) that could ruin the story for you if you let them. I chose to ignore these things, and just enjoy the movie.
I don't want to put any spoilers here- but I have to say that Mal Reynolds (the ship's captain) is a character that any Freeper could respect, and, as well, are most of the others. The writer, Joss Whedon has managed to tie up loose ends (some of which I didn't even realise were loose ends) from the series in quite an admirable manner.
I will warn you that this is a violent movie, but it does not dwell on gore.
Oh, and I expect to see the phrase "I aim to misbehave" become a popular tagline on here. :) Go see the movie, and you'll understand why!
Indeed. The "Star Wars" of a new generation.
Someone needs to start a thead titled, "Serenity movie depicts conservative rebels vs liberal social hell" or something like that. Show in the title the political signigicance and people here will read the thread. If they read the thread they might go to the movie. If they go to the movie this might become the block buster it needs to be.
I believe that when the series started, Joss Whedon told Nathan Filon how he wanted the character of Mal Reynolds to be played: "John Wayne"
I second, this movie was awesome. They cut through the crap with a quick narrative wrapped in a flashback, which was brilliant. Every scene advanced the plot, there was no wasted effort. This is the one exception I've made after swearing off the public movie theater experience forever.
A ship could bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. Find a crew, find a job, keep flying.
From what I've heard Fox owns the exclusive rights to any Firefly TV show for 10 years. Given the outstanding DVD sales and what appears to be a successful movie (#2 on IMDB currently), one would hope that they will realize what they're sitting on and correct their past mistakes.
FOX correct a mistake?
LOL....good one.
Aren't they the idiots that let Farscape get sold to the Sci-Fi channel?
Fox did cancel Futurama and The Lone Gunmen, though.
Maybe you are right about Farscape.
It was Showtime I was thinking about that sold Stargate SG-1 to the Sci-fi channel.
What a dumb move that turned out to be as it was the only show on Showtime that I had a reason to pay for to watch. When it was sold I quit paying for that channel.
Futurama is my all time favorite cartoon.
Lone Gunmen was an awesomely quirky show and I was ticked they killed off the characters in the last episode of the one and only season.
I loved this movie.
This ties with the penguin movie for #1 of the year, and this is the best scifi I've seen in a decade or two.
I saw the movie Friday. Never saw any Firefly but I'd heard such good things about it. LOVED the movie. Currently halfway through the show. How on Earth did something that good get cancelled?
Next viewing: Friday, at the latest. Dragging friends with me. Wow.
Lois: Oh no Peter! How could they do that?
Peter: Well unfortuantely Lois, there's just no more room on the schedule. We just gotta accept the fact that FOX has to make room for terrific shows like Dark Angel, Titus, Undeclared, Action, That 80's Show, Wonder Falls, Fast Lane, Andy Richter Controls The Universe, Skin, Girl's Club, Cracking Up, The Pitts, Firefly, Get Real, Freaky Links, Wanda At Large, Costello, The Lone Gunman, A Minute with Stan Hooper, Normal Ohio, Pasadena, Harsh Realm, Keen Eddy, The Street, American Embassy, Cedric The Entertainer, The Tick, Louie, And Greg The Bunny....
Lois: Is there no hope?
Peter: Well I suppose if ALL those shows go down the tubes we might have a shot.
ping.
Hey, what's "Firefly" doing in that list of horrible shows? "Firefly" rocked! I have only been a fan for a week but man, that was an awesome show.
The official excuse for Sci Fi ending the series was that "Sci Fi channel was trying to get away from all that space ship stuff"....then went on to fund or create other new sci fi shows, including the new Battlestar Galactica series (ie, another "space ship" show), which, unlike Farscape, is "in house" for the owners of Sci Fi Network, and thus makes them more money than Farscape does, because they didn't own Farscape, the Jim Henson company owns the rights. Basically, Sci Fi Network screwed the fans out of a proper ending with the fifth season of Farscape because they were a bunch of greedy bastards.
I saw the "Serenity" this past weekend. Loved it, but then I dug the series too. The girl who played River Tam (Summer Glau) did a great job. I liked the character on the TV show, but she took it to a new, spooky level in the film. Something about a girl who wields big honking meat cleavers who's cute and somewhat creepy. Heck of a movie!!
:-)
Saw it again last night. Both my brother and his friend thought it was a great flick. I enjoyed it as much as the first time. It really is a movie about fighting against a government that's trying to control every aspect of its citizens' lives (to horrible effect).
