Linksys seems to be the best of all I've tried, but I, too, was not satisfied with the range. High-gain antennas helped, but the best solution has been a Cisco WRE54G wireless extender. That puppy shoots a signal almost 100' through an aspen grove and brick church to an office annex.
I just bought a Netware router, and it seems to have pretty good range as far as my laptop being able to pick up the signal everywhere in the house. However, for my son's PC I bought a Netware adapter that plugs into one of the USB ports of his computer, and that doesn't pick up the signal worth squat. I may have to pop for an adapter card.
IIRC that extender only works with certain Linksys routers. Is the (fairly standard) WRT54G one of 'em?
I use US Robotics gear for the router - their latest superG router does a very nice job as a firewall and router.
I use Linksys USB G adapters on the PCs and when I travel - their range and reception are incredible. Once boosted the range to half a mile by cutting a coffee can in half and placing the adapter in the center.

I don't like the mini version they have for laptops, though my neighbor swears by them.

Better pony up for a new router.
Best way to guard against that is to use 1) encryption and 2) MAC filtering. Pretty easy to set up.
Oh, have you tried other channels? In my neighborhood, because of the density of wireless 'things', I'm on channel 9 which seems to be clear of interference.
As for placements, I moved mine to the attic after getting frustrated in trying to get a signal around a chimney.
Yup, tried 'em all. 2 neighbors are broadcasting on #6, so I tried everything else. No luck.
After talking to Belkin tech support today (hint: If they list their tech support's number prominently on the front of the product box it means either 1) that you'll never get through to them; or 2) that their tech support sucks. My experience was the latter) and getting nowhere, I'm going back to the Linksys router and possibly a different PCMCIA 802.11g card.
