Mayor Of Galveston "We don't need 'em"
09/23/05 | Me

Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas appeared on The O'Reilly Factor via telephone tonight. When O'Reilly asked her if she had enough National Guard she informed him that "we don't need 'em. We have our own Police force and fire department. We can handle it." Quite a contrast to the inept Mayor of New Orleans.

Yeah, but let's wait 'til after the storm. She might be talking out the other side of her mouth.

Storms are so unpredictable there's no way to know what is needed until it has passed.

Yeah, I think it was Matt Drudge who played an interview with Ray Nagin (the interviewer sounded like Garland Robinette, for any of you New Orleanians out there), taped and broadcast the Sunday before Katrina's strike, and Nagin sounded confident that he had everything under control.

Of course we know the rest -- everything was OK Monday after the strike, and the levees broke Tuesday morning.

It's just futile to try to second guess mother nature.

You've got to remember, this is Texas.  You don't ask for more than you need.

A lot of you may remember the famous Texas Ranger boast attributed to Captain W.J. McDonald, "One riot, one Ranger."  That's the attitude.  But, when you need help, you know its coming (unless its 1836 and you're inside the Alamo :-) )

Good Attitude.

Look to your city to solve problems first, get your police to show up to do their jobs, and then get state of Texas help, and only look to the federal government at last resort.

Unlike N.O. where the police went looting first.

That's because us Texans "remember the Alamo" and will make sure that never happens again.

Texans don't have to ask if their neighbors will come to help - they know they will.

Hey, Davy Crockett, aka John Wayne, KNEW it was hopeless to defend the Alamo, but did it anyway to give Sam Houston time to get his troops together at San Jacinto.

No, but even if it had been, the situation was handled correctly and a very few would have lost their lives. Local officials were successful in implimenting their emergency plan unlike the inept Mayor of new Orleans.

Do you happen to know Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas' party affiliation? I really don't care what political party she's affliated with. I was making a point about the differences between the two Mayors and their actions to protect their citizens. This point seems to be lost on you.

You're quite right, of course.

I'm from San Antonio.  So, I have some acquaintance with the story.
