Eddie Murphy once did a hilarous skit about how instead of getting a McDonalds hamburger, his mom would make him a soggy ol' burger using wonder bread. So todays' question is: what gross food were you forced to eat as a kid (or how did you sneak it to the dog?) For example:
1. Chipped Beef on toast - Gross, gross, gross! My dinner on those nights usually consisted of dry toast. I'd practially use an eyedropper when applying that white, pasty goop.
2. Canned spinach - like algae from a fish tank.
3. Raisins - My brother liked them so Mom would get them as a snack for both of us! Raisins ONLY belong in oatmeal cookies. Period.
Please use this space to vent regarding any gastronomical childhood traumas you may have experienced. :-p
DITTO!
I love creamed corn. Though homemade is much better.
I love asparagus, too...but I'm thinking the canned stuff probably doesn't resemble the fresh kind at all.
Seriesly, I've often wondered how many of the folks who claim to hate vegetables hate them either because they grew up with just the canned kind (though I do like canned green beans and a few other things), or else had parents who cooked veggies to mush (a la my Mom's mother's methods).
Almost any vegetable is wonderful when it's not abused.
Pickled Beets. They still make me gag.
Strangely enough, unpickled beets are okay.
BTW, who needs syrup of ipecac when you have canned spinach in the house. It will instantly induce vomiting.
Fried bologna sandwiches

Now, GRILLED is much better. Makes the bologna actually edible. :)
"You'd better eat that, don't you know there are starving kids in Korea?"
I know,I'm dating myself.

LOL. Yes I remember. I think my folks though used "China" or "India."
I think at the time the kids in China ate better than I did. :)
Liver balls eeeewwwww!
Liver any sort and cooked any way. YUCK :P
House Burger!
>>> Jello with cabbage
???
What in the world??!!!
oh Easy!
Cream of Tomato Soup
I'm actually one of those kids who LOVED chipped beef on toast and canned spinach.
I ate everything ('cept for cream of tomato soup).
Cream of Tomato soup is grilled cheese dipping sauce! ;-) If it was ever "chipped beef on toast & canned spinach" night, I knew I p'd off mom somehow!
I didn't know veggies didn't come in a can until I was 14.
Food from a box in the cupboard or freezer - frosting from a can, veggies from a can. Veggies, preferrably in sauce - cheese, mushroom soup, something creamy that would hide the taste.
I don't think I ate salad at home until ... I moved from mom's home.
I should look into therapy and sue my parents.
Plain tomato soup I can handle.
But for some reason, put milk in it, and I start gagging.
And chipped beef & spinach were cool because you bought them in a store! They were 'citified' foods ;)
My mom used to make Cream of Tomato and grilled cheese too...I still like it.
My dad cooked in our house. He could have been a chef in any fancy restaurant, but instead became an MIT nerd engineer. I liked everything he made.
He spent a ton of time in Okinawa and viet nam and picked up a lot of cooking ideas there (but never used dog or rat as the meat)
There are very few foods I dislike. Celery is one.
Mine was the opposite. We were a 'truck farm' which meant we grew produce for the farmer's market.
We grew, butchered, canned and froze almost everything we ate...even tomatoes.
I think I was in college before I saw a bag of store-bought frozen veges in the freezer.
The down side was, well, what was on the table was it...picky eaters died young in our family ;)
Amen. Fry it so it's dripping in butter, on squishy white bread.
