(Vanity)Yucky Foods from Childhood
Millee

Posted on 09/20/2005 9:43:01 AM PDT by Millee

Eddie Murphy once did a hilarous skit about how instead of getting a McDonalds hamburger, his mom would make him a soggy ol' burger using wonder bread. So todays' question is: what gross food were you forced to eat as a kid (or how did you sneak it to the dog?) For example:

1. Chipped Beef on toast - Gross, gross, gross! My dinner on those nights usually consisted of dry toast. I'd practially use an eyedropper when applying that white, pasty goop.

2. Canned spinach - like algae from a fish tank.

3. Raisins - My brother liked them so Mom would get them as a snack for both of us! Raisins ONLY belong in oatmeal cookies. Period.

Please use this space to vent regarding any gastronomical childhood traumas you may have experienced. :-p

I'm not sure if it had onion soup mix in it; I know most of her other recipes did. Seems to me that the Spanish rice and onion soup mix recipes are from the same era, that's all. The Spanish rice had bits of onion in it, now I think of it, and that sure isn't from soup mix. I thought it was the worst meal in the world, though one of my brothers really liked it.

According to my older brothers, my mother used to make something called "friggadelloes" or "frickadelloes" (phonetic spelling). I don't know what it was, but my brothers would only mention it in tones of horror. I think it had beef. It must have been so bad that she stopped making it by the time I was born. If four growing boys would not eat it, I guess it really was bad. Maybe I was lucky only to have to deal with the Spanish rice.

It may have been this

Frikadel (Dutch Meatloaf)

It is commonly eaten mashed up in a bed of rice and vegetable soup.

1 lb ground beef
1 lb ground sausage
2 medium potatoes
1 egg
2 teaspoons ground nutmeg, to taste
1 1/2 teaspoons salt, to taste
2 tablespoons parsley flakes
1 teaspoon black pepper or white pepper

"friggadelloes"

That's a new one to me, too. Ugh.

We often didn't have a lot of 'luxuries' like lipton soup mix. Remember how it was in commercials, like all the rich (and good!) moms just naturally had it on hand? My mom had to rely on homemade canned tomato sauce. And actual sauteed onions and kidney beans she soaked the night before, instead of canned. It was really good and I haven't been able to duplicate it to my liking. I remember being embarassed because we couldn't afford those lastest trends, silly me!, but it sounds like the spanish rice was all the better as a result.

Maybe you remember this one? I wish my mom had written down the recipe. It was a kind of jello dessert made with cottage cheese. Sounds yucky, but it wasn't. I know there are a plethora of recipes for jello with whipped cream and such, but I distinctly remember her using cottage cheese and whipping it first to blend it. It was sooo good.

Other than tongue, butter milk, cottage cheese, monkey brains, blood pudding, haggis and canned eggs and ham from C rations, I have never found anything I will not eat.

A friend's grandmother used to make beef tongue and noodles.

The noodles were homemade.

Mmmmm, beef tongue broth.

Urp

Lima beans were the worst. The instantly became cold when removed from the stove.

When we were less wealthy, my mom would make bologna boats with mashed potatoes (boxed) in the middle. I liked it.

Wouldn't pass my lips now, though.

Unless I were starving.

Literally starving.

I just have to ping the mod to your post. Not too long ago we got into a discussion about jello and the things people put into it to create jello salads.

Our ickiest jello salad was cherry with celery, carrots, onion and pecans. I have hated anything in my jello since then!

>>>>tomato aspic

(I had to look this one up)

1 1/4 cups boiling water
1 (.3-ounce) package regular lemon-flavored gelatin*
1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon finely minced onion
1/8 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
Ground cloves to taste
2 cups diced celery
Lettuce

hmmm, no. Pass :P

I do love crabs and lobster. I've been catching crabs since I was 2. Cleaning them myself since I was 5. Even going out to the nesting areas in the bay by myself since I was 8 :)

Despite the fact tarantulas are from the same family, I don't think I would ever try them. There would be nothing left to cook once I've finished smashing them into dust from my irrational fear of them ;)

A lot of foods are regional. Rhubarb can't grow down here (too hot and humid) so it's weird and alien.

I've had it and I thought it was pretty good...but I eat almost anything ('cept tomatoes with milk in them).

>>>Rhubarb is called the pie plant. You put so much sugar in it the pie is as sweet as you like.

Don't add that much sugar! Add strawberries ;)
