Yesterday on his radio show, conservative talk host David Gold said the proposed massive federal spending for Katrina "relief" is a TIME OF TESTING FOR CONSERVATIVES. Do they really believe in small and efficient government - - or will they accept socialist-scale big spending as long as it's proposed by a Republican president?
Gold said he was surprised and disheartened to find many posters on FreeRepublic.com making excuses for the huge proposed spending. Bet they'd be sounding a different tune if Clinton were president and he had proposed it!
Oh sheesh that is the propaganda from the writer in today's WSJ.
A lot of that money is going into infrastructure(plus a good dose of conservatism such as school vouchers and home ownership).
What would Davy Crockett do?
DUH, name me one President who has...
In theory, but the worst spending ever has been with a GOP president and a GOP congress.
Conservatives completely gave up on small government after 9-11, if not before.
Anybody ping David for his response?
There was a time not too long ago when that was unquestionably true, but it seems to be less and less true with each day. I'm afraid that the numbers just don't lie.
And there we have it, summarized by a mindless Bushbot automaton (Dane). It can be more liberal than what Clinton would propose, but as long as it's a republican, it's okay.
'True Believer' partisans of either persuasion disgust me.
Yeah, Stephen Moore. Otherwise known as "the writer" for those who are big spenders.

Taking money from me to give to others for homes is not conservatism, it's socialism.
I have no problem spending the money on New Orleans to a point...rebuilding and lending a helping hand, yes. Giving money outright to everyone with a hand out -- no.
The President has said spending will be cut to help pay for this...fine...let's cut the spending on all these foreign governments who use the money to kick us in the rear. It's time we spend our money taking care of our own, rather than throwing it around as foreign aid.
We can also make some further cuts in all those government entitlement programs and other perks for "the poor." I think the President has wanted to get government out of the welfare and charity business. This might be a good way to do it.
With regard to Katrina, what is your solution?
I support LIMITED federal spending in this case. Let the feds rebuild the levees correctly and the city should be rebuilt by private industry and the people who want to live there.
That seems to be the attitude.
"Well clinton isn't proposing it, remember character counts."
Oh, yeah, that makes it easier to stomach. </sarcasm>
I agree, and I blame Bush for all the other stupid spending, I mean, the man has an allergy to the Veto.. I'd rather spend money to rebuild NO than all that other crap he does, so that he can be seen as a "compassionate" conservative.
"Conservatives completely gave up on small government after 9-11, if not before.
Yep, and that means they are not Conservatives anymore, they are just liberals in the GOP party.
Actually if you look at the prescription drugs entitlement which was created by the GOP, and was the first new entitlement since LBJ, the sheer extent of what we committed to in future dollars, would make LBJ and/or FDR blush. They would have LOVED to have done something that big, but would have been scared to try.
Let me rephrase that so that my meaning is not lost, I believe GW spends a ton on social programs so that he can be a "nice guy". Thats a waste in my opinion.
Ah...."infrastructure." I remember that was one of Bill Clinton's favorite words and excuses for robbing taxpayers. A few of us old fossils do not think that we should create a new Operation Rathole to subsidize people who want to live under sea level.....but, of course, our views went out with the horse and buggy, right?
LOL! And we're cursedly independent. We believe in thinking for ourselves. Since we don't follow the party line, we, er, "discuss" things a lot. Seems to me that's a sure sign of conservatism!
