Linksys Wireless Router Problems

Posted on 09/16/2005 10:34:03 PM PDT by Cedar

I am almost too tired to ask at this point. Been working on this for hours, but here goes. I bought an HP laptop and got a Linksys wireless router.

I installed the wireless software on my main PC as told to do. Router connected fine with my cable modem, no problem.

Then when I tried to install it on my new laptop, I cannot get wireless connection. I do get regular internet connection, but no wireless connection.

I've contacted Linksys by phone, I've contacted HP troubleshoot by online chat, and still no one can fix the problem.

I get the error message from HP network: Warning: Windows is not controlling network connections...HP has detected that another application might be controlling the connection settings. The WZC service disabled or turned off.

So I went to Microsoft.com to see how to turn on WZC service, but so far nothing in the article has worked.

I've already tried to update the driver on the network adapter, but there are no other updates for it.

My laptop is: HP Pavilion zv5434rs notebook

My network adapter on the laptop: Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN

When I try to use the software that came with the router, it gets to a point in the setup, then says "unable to connect to router" check cables, etc. Well, I've unplugged and plugged in several times, cables are fine, as I said I have regular internet connection on the laptop, just can't get the wireless connection working.

If anyone out there has an idea, I would really appreciate it. I'm about to collapse from exhaustion (!), but still will hang in there a little while longer if anyone's got an idea.

Thanks!

I did turn off Zone Alarm, but still getting the status message of no access because no address.

Just went to Device Manager and checked the properties of the Realtek adapter (regular internet). Under Advanced - Property: Network Address, it just shows "Not Present" and it does have a place above that to click on to enter a value. Should I enter a Value, and if so, which number should I enter? I DO HAVE regular internet connection (just not the wireless) so maybe I shouldn't put in a value here........don't want to mess up the regular internet connection.

Under the Advanced Properties for the Broadcom adapter (wireless), it has different properties, but it does have "Locally Administered MAC Address" and for this it shows ""Not Present" --- again I can enter a Value for it too, but don't know if this is the correct thing to do.

Their customer support is quite excellent (at least it was the last time I needed it 8 months ago). I've had a Linksys wireless router for over two years now, and it's been terrific.

In Zone Alarm on the laptop, where it says 0000000, enter the IP address for your desktop. A couple years ago I had the same problem you are having and that solved it, perhaps it will work for you.

Not just Zone alarm is the problem. Norton and McAfee have privacy monitors as well. Those impede your access. Same with the Windows firewall. Also, make sure you disable any other connection to the internet on your lap top. It is my experience that sometimes that gave me trouble with my laptop as well.

Linksys is very good by phone. And I used this website http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ way back when.

I'm on my laptop now through my linksys wireless router. And, I had no trouble with it.

Be patient, it's probably something simple that you will laugh at later (okay much later).

I've talked to Linksys rep twice already (last night). We went through several steps, then they sent me emails of articles.

They were nice, but weren't able to solve the problem exactly.

"it's probably something simple that you will laugh at later"

I'm sure of that!

Since I keep getting the status messages about no address, I'm thinking that is the problem. Obviously, I know very little about all of this (and probably shouldn't be attempting to fix it -- but it is interesting....and frustrating too).

Thanks for that link also.

You know I just remembered that I went ahead and shut off Zone Alarm, but still the problem is there. So don't know if adding that address to ZA will help....

Also, my desktop lets Windows automatically assign an IP address...so it shows no address. I use RoadRunner -- don't know if they change the addresses or what.

(I'm definitely in over my head, but learning through all of this)

One time the guy in India was not able to help me, so he bumped me up to the supervisor in the US and we solved the problem with a patch.

I just bought a recent NETGEAR wireless router that required a login and wizard before the wireless would work. Mind you, the wired functions worked fine, but the wireless would NOT work until I logged on and approved wireless feature choices.

But that was NETGEAR.

Last night I had a woman (sounded like from India). I'll keep that in mind about the supervisor...

*L* I know the feeling. I know nothing about this stuff but that did help me so I thought it worth mentioning. The IP address (and that may be an incorrect term in this instance) that went into Zone Alarm is not from Road Runner but from the router. For instance, the router is 192.168.1.1 and your desktop might be 192.168.1.2 then the laptop 192.168.1.3. My apologies for the confusion. Good luck on solving your problem!

I tried to go through the Linksys setup, but it keeps telling me to plug in a network cable.....but I HAVE regular internet access with the this router on my laptop, so the network cable is definitely plugged in!

For some reason, the wireless setup for it just won't go through.

I do have the login info on it correctly (as far as I know... :)

Having regular access does not imply you will have wireless setup. you have to do additional stuff....I do remember that!

Did you plug your cable/DSL modem in to the WAN (the one seperate from the group of 4 ports marked LAN)?

I've tried using HP online Network Assistant to make the wireless network. It goes through several steps then I get "HP Network Assistant was unable to configure your wireless security settings for an unknown reason."

And that is as far as HP will go with the setup.

Linksys setup wizard gives me this message: "Unable to connect to the Router! Check that the Router has been connected to the PC".............and yet I can connect to the "regular" internet through the Router on this very laptop! Can't understand that message at all.

When I try to run the Windows Network Setup Wizard, I get the message: "The network connections listed below are disconnected. Plug in your network cables or otherwise connect your network hardware" And of course the network cable is plugged in and is giving me "regular" internet connection (just not wireless). So there's no problem with the cable....and obviously the router is connected.

It has to do, I guess, with the "wireless" network adapter -- I got the update from Broadcom, but for some reason the adapter is still not working for wireless connectivity.

This is only a guess.

Yes, I did. All the correct "lights" are on, on the router:

Power
WLAN
Port 1 (desktop network cable)
Port 3 (laptop network cable)
Internet

So, yes, I have my cable modem plugged into the "internet" port on the router.
