LA Levee Eng.: No Amt will make present levees safe!

Did yo hear the interview with the engineer whp has been working on the Levees for a long time, discussing why the Levees busted, what it would cost to fix them and how..

And hear him say, that no amount of repair or "u[grading of the present New Orlkeans Levee system, will ever be able to protect the city from a force 5 or 4 class Hurricane? Basically said that the whole levee system would have to be redesigned and built anew to be able to properly protect the city from a future reoccurance, and his optimistic estimate with all the money in the world.. it would take at least 10 years?

Especially when you consider by almanacian and
scientific record, we are entering a 30 year
long cycle of strong hurricanes seasons.

There is much ado in the leftist muddlebarind
and addlepated crowds junk lore, that these last
two years of stronger and more frequent storms are evidence of global warming, but there is much more documented and conrete factual record, that they are merely a natural climatological cycle, that has occured many times i the past, and shock of shocks, long before, the beginning of
the Industrial Revolution...And Dats the *facts* Jack! :-)

10 years? At least double that. It took 30 years to upgrade the levees after Betsy in 1965 to withstand Cat 3. I think they were close to finishing it when Katrina hit and they said they had finished the section on 17th Street which didn't hold. Big big deal to beef up hundreds of miles of levees.

I say rebuild and let the city get hit by another big hurricane under democratic control and watch them blunder. When 1000's die, we can all blame the dems for being incompetent and impeach them all!

Further, Mary Landrieu administered the FEMA and state funds for levee work as Louisiana State Treasurer from 1988 to 1995. Developing, as they say...

Yeah, that might have been true. I thought that he also said that there was a possibility that the barge struck the canal before the breach. This would be consistent with the witness reports.

Sounds confusing to me. I guess I'll have to wait for more information.

I heard a rumor, that a *large* chunk of money
that was supposed to be used for the levees,
ended up being invested in casinos, river boats
and hotels....

The question is: what is the chance of a hurricane of cat 4 or 5 hitting New Orleans within, say, the next 50 years?

Yeah, that might have been true. I thought that he also said that there was a possibility that the barge struck the canal before the breach. This would be consistent with the witness reports.

What would have caused the barge to move through the canal and against the wall if there wasn't already water flowing out that way? I would think it very likely that a barge could turn a small spillover into a big one fairly quickly, but even a small spillover on an earthen levee can expand itself exponentially through erosion.
