Did yo hear the interview with the engineer whp has been working on the Levees for a long time, discussing why the Levees busted, what it would cost to fix them and how..
And hear him say, that no amount of repair or "u[grading of the present New Orlkeans Levee system, will ever be able to protect the city from a force 5 or 4 class Hurricane? Basically said that the whole levee system would have to be redesigned and built anew to be able to properly protect the city from a future reoccurance, and his optimistic estimate with all the money in the world.. it would take at least 10 years?

I am normally the last person to bitch about grammar or spelling, but I do not think I have ever read a more poorly worded vanity post.

Nope! :-) He didn't give an answer except to
say they need to do tests.

15 miles north would place it squarely in the middle of Lake Ponchetrain. Probably not much different than where it is today.

Not one federal reconstruction dollar should go directly to Louisiana government. Otherwise, it will be misused, spent on democrat campaigns, etc.

You know, linguistically you may be challenged but, you raise an interesting question. Should a city be built below sea level on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico when it is well known that cat 5 hurricanes can strike there? If the answer to that question is yes, will the engineers of the levee system be willing to put their lives and fortunes on the line to guarantee that a flood of the city will never happen again?

SAME problem in FL. One of the reasons for the trees knocking down power lines is that the environmentalists wanted to stop the butchery to tree trimmings.
Result MASSIVE power outages from a category 1 Katrina.
Katrina is a storm that proves evironmentalists are a danger to the environment.

On Hannity and Colmes they talked to a couple of residents and apparently 2 people say they witnessed a barge striking one of the canals before it failed. When an Army Corps of Engineers guy was questioned about that he mentioned that the canal breach in question had been over topped and was suffering severe erosion at the base. He said that it could have been due to the erosion, due to the barge, or both.
This begs the question on why a barge was still in the canal at the time the hurricane struck and why no one took actions to remove it before the hurricane.

Ooops! Not that up on the local geography, but i
think you catch my drift...further inland and
upland. with a manmade "landlocked" port.
To: NickatNite2003
Wouldn't make much of a difference considering most of the city is already there.

Bingo. Besides all the ongoing well-known graft in LA, Blanco and Nagin's incompetence in hurricane response is yet another indication that LA is incapable of effective self-government.

I really do much better on my second or third edit...
unfortunately that is not an option here at FR.
If i thought there was a way to petition the
'Powers That Be', to make the ability to edit
ones posts, and not have it fall on unreceptive
ears, i would do so, with earnest alacrity! 8oP

This man who spoke was an Engineer with the Corp of Army Engineers and he felt the barge entered after there was a breach. That breach was reported by NHC at 8:14AM 9/29/05.

We thought about it for a long time,
"Endeavor to persevere." And when we had thought about it long enough, we declared war on the Union.

I asked the sam equestion about the barge.
A friend who is a NO long time resident told me he was uptown last week and heard that the barge was not tied up or secured for the storm.
