PENGUINS BUILDING STANLEY CUP CONTENDER by Joe Sager pittsburghpenguins.com 09/09/2005
Are you ready for some hockey?
The Pittsburgh Penguins hit the ice Wednesday in the most-anticipated training camp in recent memory. Following a 310-day work stoppage that wiped out the 2003-04 season, the NHL and the Penguins are back and better than ever.
Everywhere we go, its very exciting. People cant wait for the season to start, said Penguins captain Mario Lemieux. Its a very exciting time for Pittsburgh and the fans.
The mere fact that hockey is back is enough to fire up Penguins fans. Add in an unprecedented star-studded free-agent bounty that brought Mark Recchi, Sergei Gonchar, Ziggy Palffy, John LeClair, Ryan VandenBussche, Steve Poapst, Andre Roy and Lyle Odelein to Pittsburgh as well as a trade for goalie Jocelyn Thibault and the selection of super prospect Sidney Crosby in the NHL Entry Draft, and Pittsburgh is the place to be in the hockey world again.
Its very exciting for the organization to be able to bring in all these great players and put a great team on the ice so we have a chance to compete, Lemieux said. Its great for the city and our fans.

Doobee doobee doo....beware of the Penguins.
Avs All the way..
I remember the Stanley Cup.
That was a trophy for winning a sport they used to play long ago called hockey...right?

Woo- haaaa! The Penguins indeed are going to have a great team. Can't wait to see my Av's play without Forsberg and Foote, I think the divisional domination period is definitely over (Canucks stole it from us in '04 after nine years). Calgary and Vancouver are looking good. Philly is looking good. And the Rangers - let's place a bet on when they go from contender to pretender this year - I'm saying february 15th.
While I'm glad that fans in Pittsburgh are excited about hockey again, they'll have to play way over their heads to be as good as Philly.
>>Avs All the way
I think the Avs are really going to struggle this year, but who knows. Everyone practically gave the Flyers the Cup already and Hatcher just went down with a knee injury (again).
I think the 'Guins have a chance to build up a strong team again, which is a good thing.
I'm going to try to get tickets to the home opener for the Sharks (vs the Bluejackets). Hopefully Rick Nash is in mid-season form ...
I've been looking for a good reason to stop being a St. Louis Blues fan now that I live in PA. Maybe now's the time to switch!
You just lost one of your big UFA signings (Hatcher). Hopefully it is not serious, but if it is ...

GO SHARKS !
the way 2 the cup is thru Philly. LETS GO FLYERS!
What's black white and red and plays golf in April?
A Chicago Blackhawk
Lots of 2-1 games in Chicago with Khabibulin. However I fear he will succumb to Karpotsevitis, i.e. sleepwalk through the season since he got his $$$$
Until the old drunk Wirtz leaves this planet and his gin soaked buttboy Pully depart, no cups. ever.
Go Minnesota Wild!
Oh...and Go Carolina Hurricanes too!
1. With his history of health problems, Mario Lemieux will be lucky to play more than 40 games this season.
2. Sidney Crosby may become a star someday, but I think he may be the most overrated NHL prospect in years. He's been described as the next Gretzky/Lemieux/etc., but his junior record doesn't give that indication at all.
3. Most of the players listed in this article are aging NHL stars who are long past their primes.
Real penguins? How cute!
