I really like some things about Firefly - sort of Mad Max/Western in Space, the rough frontier western mix, really beat up looking technology. The Stargrates and Femstar Galactica are unbearable. I wouldnt watch either if it was the only thing on television. But I'm in the minority there as they're popular; to each his own.

IIRC all of the Firefly episodes are on the DVD, but not all of them aired on broadcast TV.

Essentially you have seen the unseen episodes...

"This must be what going insane feels like..."

Remember back when the Sci-Fi channel first came out? They had like two weeks of these weird patterns on the screen before they actually started broadcasting. That made me insane.

I saw a pre-screening of it. The movie is released on September 30...About three more weeks. :)

Movie is very good IMO, especially if you're a fan of the series.

I'm an armchair film-critic I guess. At least all my co-workers know exactly how I feel about any given movie.

Without giving too much away, be prepared to leave the show in disbelief if you were attached to two of the Firefly's crew.

Thanks for the ping, as always.

BTW, please excuse the vanity, but this seems like a logical thread to ask this question:

I just had my first novel published, a sci-fi adventure, and I'd like to get it into the hands of those fine people in Hollywood, hopefully so someone will make a movie out of it (or at least buy the rights!).

Is there anyone on this thread who has some advice for how a guy living in Calgary can get the book seen there? Agent info, etc.?

Thanks, FRiends! I appreciate the advice and apologize again for the blatant vanity.

Cheers
Jim

Battlestar Galactica has me increasingly convinced that the Colonials originally came from Earth itself.

Finally, I hear someone else saying it. And then in the last new episode (Home Part II) we find an elaborate map on Kobol showing how to find Earth. We didn't seem similar elaborate maps for Caprica, et al. In fact, we saw the Earth perspective on the universe, complete with constellations that correspond to all of the Colonial worlds. Do you reckon there's an Earth constellation of on Aerilon? I think not.

And, consider, how would be people on Kobol know what the stars look like from Earth? No evidence of those who left Kobol coming back, eh?

Actually they said all that in the last episode, Home-2. After they entered the Tomb of Athena, they appeared to be in a grassy outdoor area inside a stone circle (Stonehenge?). Each rock had designs on it that were the 'symbols' of each of the 12 colonies. They looked up and each of the symbols were also constillations in the sky as seen from Earth.

I think it was Roselyn that said something like the people who left for Earth, once they arrived, must have communicated back the symbols/names for the 12 colonies as a hidden 'map' for them to find their way to earth when the time was safe/right. They were using the symbols forever, but didn't know they represented constillations as seen from the surface of Earth, and thus didn't know that was how they were meant to follow.

Enemy Mine has been playing on AMC alot lately. That was classic Scifi! Would love to see a remake or spinoff of that on scifi channel. What happens to Willis Davage and Zamis?

I don't believe the Colonials came from Earth. If you follow the theism of the Colonials and Cylons, you begin to see a pattern.

The Cylons follow one god, who is described as having a Divine Plan and is all knowing, a creator...The Creator of All Things. The Cylon god seems to fit the Judeo-Christian vision of God.

The Colonials worship the 12 Greek gods and goddesses and use idols in the practice of their diluted and weakened faith.

Early on, the Cylon aboard the Ragnar Munitions Depot alluded to mankind turning their backs on God, and that maybe God had given souls to a new race to replace the prodigals.

The recurring theme of the Cylon faith is "This has all happened before and it will all happen again."

I believe the grand story arc here will paint mankind as a repeatedly fallen race. Before they settled Kobol, they fled from another world cataclysm where they had turned their backs on God. Faith renewed, they began thriving on Kobol until they fell into idolatry and polythiesm again, at which point an unnamed agent of God inflicted retribution on them, causing them to flee and found the 13 Colonies (of which Earth is one.)

Fleeing Kobol was a repreive but not a pardon, and another agent of God in the form of the reborn Cylons returned to finish the job, and force another Exodus to a new world where the cycle can begin again. Mankind will get another chance on Earth to embrace the one God.

There have been numerous hints in the show to reinforce this suspicion on my part. Number 6 tells Baltar that he alone among the Exodus will ever see Earth. Perhaps Baltar or the hybrid child will be Adam / Eve on Earth?

The Cylons also do not know the nature of the Colonial gods...But recognize that they existed. A recent episode implied the Colonial gods were nothing more than mortals, however, as Athena cast herself in despair upon the rocks when the 13 Colonies left Kobol, killing her.

I have no doubt the 13th Colony *found* Earth, but I suspect they severed communications with Kobol shortly after arrival.

One other thing...The Constellations of the 12 Colonies literally surround Earth in the night sky. Travel between the 12 known colonies was apparently fairly routine.

The implication here is that if one could hop a shuttle from Saggittaron to Geminon, the would likely pass our solar system en-route and not even know it.

It makes one wonder: Was Earth nestled among the 12 Colonies all along? Now that the fleed is some 300-odd jumps away from Caprica, could the remnants of humanity actually be getting further and further away from Earth?

..that just takes more of the science out of science fiction.

..sometimes, the over reliance on firearms/energy weapons (sometimes :) sucks...the "shoot this/that" mindset, the use of other "tools" just seemed "Somewhat" more appropriate.

Soon maybe...w/ the way technology is "bounding" ahead of "mores/ethics"...coming conflict between science and religion. :P

Space channel in Canada ran a Firefly marathon on Monday this week - the whole series. Cool to see them all in one day and in order. I think there was even one or two that I hadn't seen before.

And I do love that episode where Jayne is a hero on some crappy planet - reading the lyrics to the ballad I could hear them singing it, especially the part where the whole bar cuts in.
