Kittens need a home!
My Apartment | Some jerk

Posted on 09/08/2005 12:57:35 PM PDT by LongElegantLegs

Sorry for the vanity; Some jerk left two little kittens outside my apartment door; They look to be about five weeks old, with their eyes open, very thin. I don't want them, but the shelters here take animals by appointment only. Any freepers in the San Antonio area need a kitty? They're pretty cute, one's white and gold and the other's a mottled brown/black. Both males, they don't seem to have any fleas, or ticks. Also, any hints on what to feed them in the meantime would be appreciated. (We don't know much about cats.) I'd really like to get them out of here before my husband gets too attached to them and insists they stay. :-)

I got Fred and Rickey when they were two week old orphans, they are 4 months old now and getting quite porky, weighing nearly as much as my two big girl cats. I fed them cat formula from the pet store from a kitten nursing bottle, then had to use a large syringe (no needle, of course).

The kitten food in cans is fine, but I mixed it with the formula at first to make the transition. Parasites are the biggest problem, they had to be treated several times. Good luck, and please don't give them away on the street. I will say that two cats entertain themselves very well when raised together.

I never ceased to be amazed at how fast kitties pick up the litterbox concept. This past spring, after 3 months of effort, I captured a 6 month old feral female kitten who had turned up in my garden. She'd clearly never been touched by a human or inside a house before (though by this time we'd gotten her pretty clear on the connection between humans and food). Had to keep her in the house overnight to get to her spaying appointment the next morning (we caught her just in time -- two tomcats had just appeared in the garden the day before!). She had the run of a couple of hallways, a carpeted staircase, and a large bathroom with a litterbox in it. She used the litterbox.

A vet friend of mine is unable to determine the gender of kittens at that age (at least by just looking). Don't waste too much time trying. It'll become clear soon enough.

They look a little hungry still, but adorable.
