New Anti-Smoking Commercial (vanity)

Posted on 09/08/2005 11:24:45 AM PDT by green pastures

Last night I saw a new anti-smoking commercial. The narrator was comparing smoking to drowning, while the visual showed water filling a house, complete with a drowning a person. The last image showed a submerged body suspended in water inside a home.

My sister and I just exchanged glances as in "How poor in taste is that?" especially with regard to all those who drowned as a result of Katrina and the aftermath.

It reminded me of the Koolaid commercial that played during a newscast reporting the Jonestown massacre.

I just wondered if others saw it and what their thoughts were. I suspect that it will be pulled.

I find them in poor taste because the perpetrate lies and junk science and obfuscate reality to sway public opinion.

Does anybody remember those "Compliance Alliance" ads, with the "cool kids" talking about how it wasn't "dope" to smoke and how they were all about snitching on anyone selling smokes to kids?  Or how about those "truth.com" ads.  Oh, that's hilarious that PM might be thinking about going in a non-tobacco direction.

I hate those ads so much, it makes me want to hang out in front of the local 7-11 and buy smokes for highschool kids.  Probably not the worst way to meet young chicks now that I think about it.

You mean that second hand smoke doesn't kill half our country's residents each year?

Nope, global warming is killing half of us a year. Second hand smoke is just depleting the ozone layer. No wait, strike that reverse it.

The commercial was likely filmed before Katrina.

Your tax dollars at work.About ten years ago they had almost the same commercial out against the dangers of huffing household products showing a 6 or 7 year old girl drowning.

I think you are mistaken. The "Public Service Announcement" you may be referring to deals with inhalants that one "huffs", like sharpie markers or carb/choke cleaner (no, I don't know this from experience). The chemicals in these items (although I think they may have made the sharpies non-huffable now), do in fact decrease the oxygen to the brain.

But I can agree how you might find the actual commercial offensive, due to recent catastrophic events.

Comcast Cable TV is airing ads encouraging people snitch out folks who have illegal cable hookups. I don't think that's a good idea.

Hey Owl! I haven't been around much lately. Busy at work.

Since we're on the topic of anti-smoking brigade, let me get my rant out...

Here in Pennsylvania, we have been bombarded with these PSA's for the Compliance Alliance on the radio. There is one that makes me cringe every time I hear it. It goes something like this...

Girls voice: "Yo, can I get a pack of ultra lights?"
Guys voice: "Um, I need to see some ID"
Girl: "Oh, I forgot it...Hey didn't I see you at that party last night?"
Other girls voice: "Ohh yea...you said how hot he is"
Guy's voice: "Uh...."
Girl's voice: "So how bout that pack of Ultra Lights?"
Guy's voice: "Well, okay, but next time, I really need to see some ID"..
Girls voice: "No way dude, you're busted. If this had been a real compliance check, you'd be in trouble"...

Okay, so it may not have been verbatim, but what really flips my lid on this, is that THEY ENTRAP HIM! Basically, he tells her NO, and then she goes off about how cute she thinks he is, and also implying familiarity in that if they were at the same party, she MUST be 18.

You can't "talk" someone into doing something illegal and then bust them when they do it. It's called entrapment.

Rant over. As you were.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. After reading your post I called my sister. She said that she had thought it was anti-smoking at first, but realized it was anti-huffing.

Due to your comments, I did a search on Partnership for a Drug-free America. The commercial was anti-huffing, not anti-smoking.

My apologies for mis-stating the 'message' of the commercial. My mind translated pieces of what the narrator said as pertaining to the effects of smoking...

There is a link to the commercial here (though my computer can't access it over dial-up.):

Yes, no doubt it was filmed before. In fact, please see my post #15. It was anti-huffing, rather than anti-smoking. The website talks about a 1997 inhalant campaign.

Whether it was filmed in 1997 or last month, the first time I saw it was last night. I wasn't disputing the making of the commercial, as much as I was commenting on the timing of its airing.

Fellow Freepers:

At the suggestion of writer Michelle Malkin last Friday, I have cobbled together a blogsite called Texas Clearinghouse for Katrina Aid to serve as a clearinghouse for refugee efforts in Texas.

Texas is getting more refugees than any other state -- that's fine, we'll take them all -- but we need help providing them with food, clothing, medicine, and shelter. We need help taking care of their pets, too.

If you are a refugee, you can information that will help you find relief. If you want to donate or volunteer, you can find someone who needs you. Believe me, there are a lot of organizations who need your help.

Right now the site mostly covers Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas but I'm adding more every night. My wife was down at Reunion Arena in Dallas Tuesday handing out care packages and spiritually ministering to the refugees as a representative of her employer. She says that the situation is tragic and that there's a lot of work to be done. There are so many children who don't know where their parents are or even if their parents are still alive.

There are a lot of churches and other organizations in Texas that need help in dealing with the problem and I would appreciate it if you would get the word out.

Many thanks,

Michael McCullough

Stingray blogsite
