Not only that, but the Governor, in a telephone interview played on FNC, confirmed that the military is ONLY in NO for search and rescue. Dumb woman. Criminally dumb.

Well, now some freepers have told me that the Washington Times article isn't written clearly at all, and they may be correct.

This is also in that article, however, and is interesting.

On her Internet Web site, Mrs. Blanco displays her letter to Mr. Bush dated Aug. 28, in which she requests various forms of federal funding for dealing with the expected aftermath of the storm, and estimates that she will need about $130 million. In the letter, Mrs. Blanco does not request federal troops, nor does she highlight any immediate needs. Clearly not enough troops were deployed. On Aug. 30, the day after the storm hit, only 4,700 National Guardsmen were mobilized in the state. Mrs. Blanco could have asked for a more substantial force under established emergency-mutual-assistance compacts, which enables governors of neighboring states to share resources in times of disaster.

Some day we're going to teach reporters how to write an article in sequence and clearly.

With cold season coming up...please don't forget to have either ZI-CAM or AIRBORNE in your medicine cabinet. If you use it when the very first symptoms appear, your cold/sniffles whatever, will not progress past that point.

I received this email this morning:

That is why I am calling on all who have already signed our "Support Judge Roberts" petition to accept my challenge and rally an additional 73,000 signers between now and Saturday.

Please forward this message DIRECTLY to 15-20 of your friends and family. In light of Rehnquist's death, urge them to make their voice heard through our petition presentation by clicking here:

http://www.grassfire.org/64/petition.asp?PID=8987951

I stupidly don't know how to use the ping list Lysie. Can you ping it for me? Thanks, B

I was among those who fail to extend their congratulations yesterday, too.

It sounds like you had a wonderful day. Wishing you many many more!

The thread linked below is an outstanding compilation of photos and captions journaling the federal and local response to Hurricane Katrina, starting before the storm made landfall.

Warning: it is loaded with pictures. It will be painfully slow to load if you are on dial-up or have a slow modem but it will be worth it.

Start the thread loading and then go do something for a few hours while waiting for all the pics to show up ... :-)

Katrina, a photographic timeline: Powerful proof federal response was NOT slow (warning, many pics)

TOBY CALLED this morning, just a few minutes ago!

While his spirit remains GOOD, he said the smell of death dominates the air, and that ABC news and the Bush bashing has him livid. He's getting fearful that the body count might exceed estimates.

500,000 pounds of shrimp are rotting, not to mention untold pounds of chicken in what was once a processing plant.

I guess the looting continues, because he said to tell y'all that he now has a sign that says " ONE OLD MAN, ONE OLD SHOTGUN " and thus far, no takers.

Mail has been stalled again, with a promise of delivery next week, but they're prepared to go pick up mail if this recent promise falls through.

I still couldn't get him to reveal any needs they might have... he just continuosly wants y'all to know how much each one of us mean to him and how thankful he is for our individual and collective friendship. His humility gets me teary eyed every time

His poor son in law is most concerned about not having a job. He's dying to get to work SOMEWHERE, ANYWHERE, ASAP.

The neighbors remain banded together, and Toby said there's a commaderie of family in staying close, as in "love is making your shower available to your neighbor."

Toby said we aren't to worry about them (easier said than done). He also told me he someone shared gasoline with him, and asked me about our gasoline availability here. (Couldn't find ANY open stations yesterday).

I wish my report could be more uplifting. I am only trying to be accurate. They're OK, but we know "pioneer living" has to be getting old FAST.

I think I'll go have a short cry now.

Blessings to eyerybody.

Building will commence - cleanup jobs and construction jobs will be available - not tomorrow, but relatively soon - within a month, I would guess. Toby's son-in-law will find opportunity knocking in many ways, and it sounds as if he is keeping his ears ready to hear the knock. Make sure to remind them of this when you next hear from Toby - it sounds like they may need to hear it.

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on Toby and his family ... *hugs*

When we went into the area from which the flood waters from Hurricane Floyd had just receded after 9 days, the sights were awful but the smell was indescribably horrific. I will never forget it. I guess it's the one thing that takes us more by surprise than anything else because we get no inkling of it from tv coverage. I won't go into detail about the various causes of the stench out of consideration of those with weak stomachs but it is truly a ghastly soup out of satan's own kitchen. Prayers for those who are living with it for now and days/weeks to come

onyx ~~~ is there anything that you need? Please let us know.

I kept thinking about your box of goodies already en route. :) I am going to run down today's cell charge if necessary, in order to get his daughter back on the phone today, because I keep forgetting to ask about his cash supply and if UPS is making deliveries. The post office here has their "certifed" mail window closed, and I am afraid to send cash thru the regular mail.

I sent it first class to Tony. The PO here said, depending on the mail available in his location, that it should reach him in 3-4 days. I mailed it yesterday...Labor Day closing prevented my mailing it on Monday. By their timeline, it should reach there Friday or Monday. Sure hope so.

Already, here, fuel prices have dropped 5% since their highs last week. I suspect they'll be down another 10% by two weeks. After that, I won't expect more than about a 10% drop during the subsequent three months. I'd expect $1.80-1.90/gal futures during the next three weeks, then lower after that.

From http://www.wtrg.com/daily/gasolineprice.html

Crude oil shows a similar drop already. I guarantee that many speculators have lost their shirts over the last couple days.
