After seeing how society crumbled in New Orleans recently, I realized that I need a basic home-defense firearm, and I'm pretty well decided on a shotgun. I'd like you FReepers' recommendations on a model. (Don't worry, I'm already resolved that the first place it'll go is to a 10-hour safety class with me. Got a well-reputed teaching facility all picked out.)
If it matters, I live in greater LA.
I'm about as macho and gun-totin' a guy as Captain Kangaroo, but these last seveal days have brought home to me that it is my RESPONSIBILITY as the head of a household to be able to protect my home and family in times of dire crisis, where the law is unavailable.
I hope I never need to use it, but I need to be ready: After the holidays, I'm adding a shotgun to my emergency kit.
Remington pump action 20 guage. The sound of the pump loading a shell will scare off most intruders and 20 is plenty of firepower for close quarters. Use #7 shot. It will kill but may not go through your walls with enough wallop to harm anyone on the other side. You should also keep a good supply of slugs around in case you have to pick off looters on your neighbor's rooftop.
I second the motion. A Mossberg pump action 12 gage. You can get those magazine extenders too. For basic home defense, that'll do nicely. You might want a collapsible stock just to make it more maneuverable at close range.
I like the Mini 30 also
He cant buy a semi auto in California
well, he said LA....maybe one of these shirts.
The Mossberg comes in the "Cruiser" model; pistol grip and legal 18.5 inch barrel which makes it a great front seat of the car/truck companion. (don't leave home without it..)
Yes, but how many shotguns have detachable mags like an AK-47 or AR-15 does? :) My comment about the two shells, by the way, was directed at the guy that suggested the Beretta over/under.
I haven't seen any of the details of the drum mag yet, but I believe it's a clockwork setup, much like the old Street Sweeper. The difference is that you can swap them out in just a couple of seconds.
'NOTHER BTTT!!!!!
:)
It's a beauty and it's a beast. Mucho macho. It is love at first sight.

Thanks, but I live in the County of Los Angeles. Even with a spotless record, a CCW permit AIN'T happening for me. Only cops, judges, P.I.s and some licensed security guards can get them.
Your daughter getting married? ;P
Who stores a Mossberg 500 with an empty chamber????
. . .and on TOP of the shotgun, a good light-pipe sight: examples:

Plenty of ammo, a GOOD cleaning kit, and a bottle of Break-Free. . .
Mossberg 500. I've had one for about 10 years now and have used and abused it in just about every weather imaginable, and it has never failed to go BOOM! when I wanted it to. And if it failed to hit what I was shooting at, it was always my fault, not the gun's.
If you shop around you should be able to find a combo (two barrel) kit for around $200, with a long barrel for when you want it to look like a nice, innocuous, duck hunting gun, and a short barrel for social occasions. It takes about 30 seconds to switch barrels.
And if you're in an urban environment, rifles have some major overpenetration and "effective range" issues that shotguns do not.
Agreed as to the detachable mags - that is a nice feature.
I'd seen that the troops in Iraq were getting drum mags - it seems like a great urban warfare concept. I didn't know us lowly civilians could get them yet.
