After seeing how society crumbled in New Orleans recently, I realized that I need a basic home-defense firearm, and I'm pretty well decided on a shotgun. I'd like you FReepers' recommendations on a model. (Don't worry, I'm already resolved that the first place it'll go is to a 10-hour safety class with me. Got a well-reputed teaching facility all picked out.)
If it matters, I live in greater LA.
I'm about as macho and gun-totin' a guy as Captain Kangaroo, but these last seveal days have brought home to me that it is my RESPONSIBILITY as the head of a household to be able to protect my home and family in times of dire crisis, where the law is unavailable.
I hope I never need to use it, but I need to be ready: After the holidays, I'm adding a shotgun to my emergency kit.
Cool!
I have a S&W 20 ga. pump - I've been happy with it.
#50665 590® 12 ga. Pump Action 9-shot capacity, parkerized finish, bead sight, 20" cylinder bore barrel with heat shield and Speed-Feed® stock.
This is what I have.....even drew on some low riders after the Northridge earthquake that were up to no good at 5am in front of our business.
Close second is the sound of an AK safety coming off and the bolt racking. Especially on that shotgun - it's a really, really evil sound. :)
Like most before me a 12ga pump is the best. But I differ on the ammo. I use deer slugs or rifled slugs. At relatively close quaters you only have to point. The slug will tear one hell of a hole in the intruder if it doesn't kill him or tear a limb off. Point at the middle of the torso, fire then pump in another round and fire again if he moves. Dead men tell no tales.
Mossberg 12 gauge pump. Buy the shortened 'police' version because it is much easier to handle in emergency situations at close quarters.
BTTT!

But Nagin had harsh words for his state's leaders, telling CNN: "What the state was doing, I don't frigging know. But I tell you, I am pissed. It wasn't adequate."
The New Orleans Democrat said he urged Bush to meet privately with Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco during the visit. The meeting took place aboard Air Force One, he said.
After reviewing the crisis with Gov. Blanco, Bush summoned Nagin for a private chat - where, according to Nagin, Bush explained: "Mr. Mayor, I offered two options to the governor. I said . . . I was ready to move today. The governor said she needed 24 hours to make a decision."
Reacting to the governor's footdragging, Nagin lamented: "It would have been great if we could have left Air Force One, walked outside, and told the world that we had this all worked out."
"It didn't happen, and more people died."
And buy a SECURITY wind breaker....it gets you through check points.
Almost any shotgun will chamber 5 shells - just take the limiter out of the magazine.
You can also buy a mag extender for the 870, for $25.
A 20 round drum? That is excellent - how is it powered?
I have a love -Hate relationship with my shotgun.
I love the fact that I can scare the crap out of scumbags by racking it, But I hate the fact when I fire it, it knocks the snot out of me.
I have a Wincheater Defender.....
The problem with pumps is try pumping it laying on the ground, or with one hand.
get yourself a good rifle....Mini 14.....M1Garand......
Good luck
Why a shotgun, why not a semi-auto rifle with a couple high-capacity magazines?
Practice, practice, practice! Familiarity with the gun is a must under stress and any 12 ga loads will kick you pretty hard if you're not used to them. You don't want to klutz out in a hairy situation.
That's unbelievable, http://www.remington.com has crashed! It was up and running Sunday evening, last I checked when another Freeper poster a similar thread.
"Practice, practice, practice...and then more practice..."
ol' hoghead
What end do the bullets come out?
With all respect, why a shotgun? Get a 45 Model 1911 and also get a concealed handgun permit. I agree, a shotgun is extremely effecetive but so is a 45 when you know how to use it. If you intend to follow a ten-hour safety course it's long enough to teach you the finer points of pistol handling.
Shotgun blasts inside the house tend to be messy and usually damage the furniture in addition to the target. Go get yourself a Springfield, or if you have the money and want to show off, get yourself a Kimber.
