Would You Leave Your Pet?
9/6/05 | Vanity

Posted on 09/06/2005 2:42:24 PM PDT by maxwellp

Watching the news on Hurrican Katrina, I've seen a few people who refused to leave their dogs because they could not bring them along to a people shelter. I thought about it and asked my husband if he would leave our two cats to fend for themselves. My husband thought about it and said "If we had young children, we would have to go and leave the cats. Well we don't have young children so I would not abandon the cats." I agreed with him. Pets are like members of your family. I simply couldn't walk out the door and leave them. Any comments from other Freepers?

"this person was just too lazy, irresponsible to what she considered a problem...it was just a bunch of excuses"

Funny, you're talking in the 3rd person about someone you should be addressing in the 2nd person. Because "she" is the person to whom you responded.

Yes, you did.

The cats were becoming destructive, not just to the house, but had destroyed a lot of the baby's things. A baby should not have to lie around in cat piss, be dressed in clothes that stink of cat piss, sit in a car seat soaked with cat piss.

According to you, it's "lazy" to think this is unacceptable and "irresponsible" to do something about it. You are welcome to that position, but in my house, the BABY wins out EVERYTIME.

Again you made it clear you think the person to whom you wrote was scum.

Judgement of your reaction was all too easy - you think she is scum.

Yes, you indeed had alot of nerve making inflammatory statements such as "never own a pet again", based on a few cross-country written comments on situations about which you know next to nothing.

Please don't judge my reaction, read anything extra into my comments or assume you know 'I know nothing about the situation'. Thank you and have a nice day.

Thanks. He's simply the finest single animal I have ever known, and still quite young, only a year and a half. They aren't fully grown until age 4.

Hub had wanted a mastiff all his life, since he was a kid. Since I got Tinker for Hub's birthday present last year, he and the dog have an incredible bond...Tink is gentle and loving with me, behaves perfectly, but when he looks at Hub, he is looking at the human he loves most in all the world...even when he first came home with us, he would go to the laundry basket when Hub was gone, and pull out one of his t-shirts, and carry it over to where I was sitting, and just lay on it with it covering his nose.

Awww! I just had a terrible experience. My man "surprised" me with a 7 week old puppy yesterday. He is adorable, but I cannot cope with an infant right now (or ever actually). He is a pug-pitbull mix and so damn cute....his face looks like a mini-mastiff. I got 2 hours of sleep last night & my 7 year old female pit is less than amused at the puppies attempts to nurse on her. The pup crapped over 12 times on the carpet already & there is no end in sight as it is only 7 weeks old. I told my man that the thought was sweet, but he must find a new home for the puppy by tonight. I just don't have the time or patience to handle it right now....I feel just awful about it though.

A puppy that cute will easily find a home--but I'm with you. This is no time for a new puppy for me, either. Thank the good Lord that Tink and Bebe are housebroken and reliable.

That's quite a couple of lap dogs you have there Judith Anne! The small one looks like it has the same ear formation as my cats (Sphynx) who I would never in a jillion years leave behind either.

Thats the way I feel. I would be haunted by them. They have never let me down and I wouldn't let them down. No, I wouldn't leave my pets.

My pet is a 23+ yo cat who would not survive. I will die before I let anything happen to her.

I have 3 dogs and a cat and they depend on me. I love them. I could never abandon them to die, either.

First, it's just a plain given that you cannot take your pet to a shelter. You just can't do it, for sanitary and other reasons.

Sanitary reasons? I have a feeling the animals are much cleaner then the people who stayed at the Superdome.

I know. My last rescue was the pitbull and she was 1 year old. It still took 2 weeks to house train her as she was living on the beach for a while. I have not had a puppy since 1987 and I was in college.

I didn't give a fig about my three cats. I said, "Hey, they're probably still at the pound. You want them, go bring them home." The long and short it, I would DEFINITELY leave them behind and not bat an eyelash.

A few years is not enough time IMHO. Never ever again for you would be better. God's creatures depend on us for their lives and love. If you don't have the patience and affection to care for pets (including their accidents and damage they do on occasion), I strongly advise you not to adopt any more of them.

There's no way I could ever leave my cat. She's been my best friend for 16 yrs or so. I swear she's so smart she can understand quite a few words like "no" and "water" and "go outside". She's always waiting for me and depends on me for everything. I couldn't possibly leave her to die alone.

Couldn't agree more. I pray to God I never have to make that decision but I could never leave my animals to die. I'd stay and take my chances.

We need to find a way to rescue humans and their animals. Maybe those of us who have animals may have to make do with less comfy accommodations (see Noah's arc) but I'll take tent city if it means my family, horses and cats can all stay together- and live.
