Watching the news on Hurrican Katrina, I've seen a few people who refused to leave their dogs because they could not bring them along to a people shelter. I thought about it and asked my husband if he would leave our two cats to fend for themselves. My husband thought about it and said "If we had young children, we would have to go and leave the cats. Well we don't have young children so I would not abandon the cats." I agreed with him. Pets are like members of your family. I simply couldn't walk out the door and leave them. Any comments from other Freepers?
Is that a Dane or a Mastiff? I've got a Dane mix myself...magnificent animals!
the dogs would go with the wife and I would stay.
No, and I'd have to take the couch too.
Right on! Another Great Dane lover!!
My cats go with me. I can fit four carriers and the litter box in the back of my Jeep with plenty of room for food and water.
When we evacuated for a tornado, we took our children and left our cat in the garage. Plenty of people had to leave their pets in carriers at the entrance to the shelter. If the F-5 tornado had levelled our street, I think our cat, in the garage, under the car, would have been better off than all those sitting on the school doorstep.
If we were bugging out today, I suppose we could put the gerbil in a Tupperware dish or something, and hope nobody noticed it if we landed in a no-pets shelter.
Is the big one a mastiff?
But no way I leave these creatures, who have shown such devotion to me and my wife, to be scared to death, and to possibly starve or die of dehydration.
Some people have to make hard choices, but I will NEVER be in that position.
Cute little fur kiss you have there.
I wouldn't be able to carry my Akita ISIS, but she could carry me.
I had to hug her after I posted that I would leave her to save my kids and hubby. I almost cried. :o(
There is no possible way that I would leave my dog behind. Our pets completely depend on us for their well being, and to just up & abandon them in their greatest hour of need and protection? Absolutely not!!
Not too long ago, my home (along with the rest of the subdivision) was threatened by a fast moving wildfire. I was at work when I learned about it, and immediately left to get my dog out to safety. In all honesty, as soon as I heard about the homes being threatened, I almost didn't care at that point if the house was lost, because everything (except family pictures) can be replaced, all I was concerned about was getting my dog. My concern for the house came after my dog was in a safe place.
Thankfully, due to the fire department attacking the wildfire from the ground & from the air, they were able to bring it under control before it got to our subdivision.
I didn't give a fig about my three cats, who were otherwise the most pampered pets you ever met. I cared about my unborn son...PERIOD. I wasn't going to chase them around the house while danger approached.
After my son was born, they because very jealous and very dirty; turning over plants and spraying dirt across my cream colored carpet, pooped repeated in the middle of the rooms, etc. I put up with this nonsense for over two months, until one of them urinated in my son's carseat while the other did their business in his crib (he was still in the basinet at this time).
That did it. No animal on this world was going to take priority over my son and his well being. All three went to the pound. People criticized me for being so heartless, and I said, "Hey, they're probably still at the pound. You want them, go bring them home."
No one took me up on my offer.
We are not getting another pet for a few years, at the least.
The long and short it, I would DEFINITELY leave them behind and not bat an eyelash.
Yes, an American Mastiff, from

Well I got five dogs and three cats, one of the dogs being a Jack Russell. If I left all eight of them alone I would only have two left, the Great White Felonious Feline and the Jack Russell.
I should mention he's only 18 mos old, in his "Great Dane stage. They get bigger and heavier. Vet said he'll weigh at least 50 pounds more as an adult, at age 4. He's at 200 now.
Just curious, how did you treat your animals before you got pregnant. Did you treat them like family at that time? If you did it is very understandable why they acted as they did. By psychologicaly adopting them and then abandoning them was very cruel on your part and I hope you decide never to own another pet.
That is an absolutely beautiful dog! Tink lays around like that, too, it looks ridiculous, but it must be comfy. ;-D
Heartwrenching thought isn't it! Our first duties are to our families....I figure I could pop Daisy in my purse & maybe no one would notice! lol
No way. My dog is family. Where I go he goes.
PETA is nothing but a useless organization.
In a heartbeat.
