If you are one of the people that have Dish network and only subscribe to the top 60, you only have CNN. I watched CNN during the hurricane and was actually really impressed...
Then came the cleanup...
I have never seen such negativity. They focus only on the negative aspects. Every guest is prodded on the race question. Every scene is a person "down and out" on the street.
Example: During a slow news section, Wolf Blitzer kept bringing up the apparent animosity between LA governor and the President. He kept bringing up the race issue. Etc.
So I upgraded to Fox news yesterday.
They were examining the criticisms as well but the were focusing on the positives. They not only looked at any perceived Federal failings but the also asked about the role the Governor and Mayor had in the preparation problems. They were, for lack of a better description, fair and balanced. No sugar coating, they showed the devastation, but they also showed coverage of the Astro dome and people smiling.
When I switched to Fox News, I felt renewed pride in America and felt refreshed in my efforts to help the victims. Fox News was certainly worth the extra 6 bucks a month.
How many people could anyone interview, after the hurricane, that were not down and out?
I happen to agree with you on this one. I do have FOX, but think CNN did have the best coverage during the storm.
Now it's back to FOX and hearing my kids call me a liberal until they forget ;)
Try the people in the Astro dome.
They actually turned down being moved to cruise ships in Galveston because the Asto dome was "like home".
They weren't in New Orleans, to be interviewed.
The media has finally settled on how to spin this, and they have their talking points in order:
1. It's Bush's fault.
2. Racism is at the root of it.
I do not understand how there can be such a coordinated, concentrated effort on dividing Americans, and stirring up hate for one another, all for political gain. But that is exactly what is happening, and it is truly evil.
Some of the media maggots would love nothing more than to see a bloody race war, with themselves narrating from the sidelines.
DITTO on all points
CNN is usually superior to FOX when it comes to breaking and developing stories. When things settle down, FOX is better.
OTOH, CNN absolutely sucks for analysis -- very partisan and agenda-driven, and extremely one-sided.
I learned this first hand. CNN has the first response thing down, then the negativity kicks in.
Wolf Blitzer is a frustrated closet homosexual. Enough said.
The news on all the cable networks were showing the depth of the tragedy and the situation of those that remained when the Dept of homeland security did not even know what was happening ( they were relying on news from the state officials , TV showed the problems immediately)
Those scenes rallied the American people to action
CNN and Fox and MSNBC did awesome work . They were in places where the government said they could not go.
I watched all 3 networks and found the initial coverage pretty much the same ( just different places and people) .
Right now what is needed is not political defenses or feel good stories, but a continued effort to get these people settled somewhere.
Then we can hear the stories of the heros , and the examination of the delinquent local officials and an examination of the federal failure to have some kind of organized national plan for national emergencies ( as this is)
I will never rely on FOX again for breaking news after they reported Pope John Paul II was dead a good 24 hours before he actually died. I was already in tears over his death when I found out it was a false alarm. Very unprofessional and disrespectful behavior on the part of FOX.
"The news on all the cable networks were showing the depth of the tragedy and the situation of those that remained when the Dept of homeland security did not even know what was happening ( they were relying on news from the state officials , TV showed the problems immediately)"
Agree and disagree.
I notice that you bring up Dept of Homeland Security. I would appreciate CNN bringing up the role of the Governer and Mayor. We are actually a republic of STATES. The Federal government is trumped by the STATE government in these instances. My point is the one sided coverage that only puts blame on the federal government. Misplaced blame.
If that was a nuke in your back yard it would need a federal action to clean out your area.
The president should have the ability to step in and act .
The head of FEMA has not one wit of experience in emergency management (his last job had something to do with Arabian horse shows) I do not think Chernoff does either
We need a department of immediate response . I am no expert but this has left me shaken . I live miles from the largest hydo power plant in the country, if the terrorist decided to nuke it and throw the entire east coat into blackness there would be such chaos in NYC that the fall out of the bomb would not even be a priority .
This hole scares me and it should scare every American that lives in a large city
i was one of those DISH people who had the top 60 and only got cnn. halfway through the week i called and upgraded so i could get fox news. i didn't mind cnn until all the reporters started asking the same questions about troops in iraq - should they come home. i wanted to shout at them, asked and answered, move on!!
That is exactly why I got Direct TV(Fox News), but also because they have NFL Sunday ticket. :D
Not sure I agree with that. Seems like Fox has/had more reporters in the field in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also I think they did a good job during 9-11.
Did anyone see him alive after they reported him dead?
For those of you who missed the CNN coverage of Katrina, I have prepared a 1 minute video summary.
Note the highly informative "crawl" at the bottom of the screen!
