Many of us yearn for a place and time where all are fairly tested, where everyone has an equal opportunity to become heroes in the eyes of the dusty children that follow behind. A place too big for fences. Out from this misty world of history, myth and dream stepped the indomitable Elfego Baca -- survivor of one of the most uneven gunfights in Western history.
Elfego instigated and prevailed in the dramatic three-day battle that came to be known as the "Frisco War." 1884 was a time of increasing hostilities not only between the Apaches and settlers, but also between resident Hispanics and the newcomer Texans -- Celtic-blooded ranchers seeking their own grassy grail. While nearly everyone knows something about Wyatt Earp and the world-famous O.K. Corral, few have heard of New Mexico's Gila Country or the star of the Frisco siege.
Odd, considering that the famous Tombstone shootout rather evenly matched four men against five, involved less than a dozen shots fired and lasted only three-fourths of a minute. While by contrast the "Frisco War" pitted a single individual against more than 80 armed antagonists, lasted 33 hours, and burned up hundreds or thousands of rounds of ammunition. The walls of Baca's refuge were splintered from the constant firing, with a reported 367 holes in the door alone.

Any Baby Boomer who spent Sunday nights at 7 watching the Wonderful World of Disney knows of Elfago Baca. His story along with Texas John Slaughter were presented in mini series form on the Frontierland segments. And ,as my wife just reminded me, Baca was played by Robert Loggia.
Everyone should visit...just don't stay too long.
Ron Peterson has one of Elfego Baca guns on display in his store or used to and another well know "bandit" ....Manuel Leyba's (sp?) handgun is owned by a friend of mine in Edgewood.......Awesome history aside from Slims versions......:o)
