Pierce Brosnan launches broadside at Bush over storm handling

DEAUVILLE, France (AFP) - Pierce Brosnan lobbed sharp criticism at President George W. Bush for his environmental policies and his handling of the hurricane catastrophe in the United States.

"This man called President Bush has a lot to answer for," the former James Bond actor told journalists as he presented his latest movie at a French festival of US film in this Normandy resort town.

"I don't know if this man is really taking care of America," Brosnan said Saturday.

He was responding to a question about the Bush administration's response to Hurrican Katrina, which has wreaked massive destruction and loss of life in the southern US.

Bush has been accused of reacting too slowly and not bringing enough federal aid to bear on the chaos, which many people fear may be linked to climate change.

Bush and his officials have refused to sign up to the Kyoto protocol which aims to reduce greenhouse emissions believed to be behind climate change.

"This government has been shameful," Brosnan said.

The outburst revealed a rare moment of passion for the actor, who had been fielding questions mostly about his new film, "The Matador", and about his career now that he has refused to play in any more James Bond films.

Yeah, I sat through Pierce Brosnan's volcano movie because I didn't have anything better to do at the time. Next time I watch it I'll cheer for the volcano.

I just watched 'From Russia with Love' and 'You Only Live Twice' this weekend. Connery was so damn good as Bond.

Most Foreigners have no clue about our federalist system. President Bush is NOT the Governor or Louisiana; he just cannot invade a state with the military.

And President Bush does not sit in some Control Room (ala Spectre in the 'Bond' movies), ordering different agencies to do this and that. These agencies have a life of their own.

Was Brosnan asking for answers from Clinton after Waco?

Gosh. I used to love him in Remington Steele. Forget him. I'm so sick of these people. As if this is at all helpful. I am more and more convinced that actors as a group are just plain stupid.

Actually, he is now an American citizen. He got his citizenship right before the last election (he said so he could vote against Bush). So, that makes it even worse. He was supposed to pass a test about that stuff (I thought) before he could join up.
