Yep. Beat me to it. Also consider a back-up pistol you're comfortable with to transition to for inside confrontation if/when the shotgun runs out of shells.
Negative, never shoot at something you don't intend to kill....buck shot does that...squirrel shot just makes them mad and gives them a chance to use their own guns.
A shotgun if you're NOT going to be proficient in shooting, or if you think you'll need to hit a large area at one time, as a defensive weapon.
A pistol if you want to carry it with you anywhere, but only if you're willing to train with it and get any permits needed. Pistol also if you want it in a drawer where you can get to it if you need to, or if you want something easier to carry versus a shotgun.
A revolver if you want something you don't have to clean as often, but want to keep it for protection.
An automatic pistol if you want the latest or greatest in firepower. But only if you are willing to work and train with it, including cleaning it often.
Go to a few gun stores and ask. The salesman will be more than happy to compare the advantages and disadvantages of each.
One more very important thing.
Don't just buy guns. Go to a range and become proficient. When it comes to using it, it's you or them. Be prepared to use them. Don't second guess yourself. If someone is intent on attacking you, end it.
#50517 500® 12 gauge w/Ghost Ring Sights, 6-shot capacity, parkerized, 18.5" length barrel, field synthetic stock. ...MSRP $468
A shotgun. You can't miss, it won't go through the wall and kill your neighbor, and it looks and sounds intimidating.
I don't understand why you are going to stow this in a "crawl space". My 20 guage short-barrelled Mossberg is on top of my armoire loaded with the safety off. (I live alone)
Even if I didn't live alone, I wouldn't put it in a hard to reach spot--though I'd have the safety on. The children in my extended family are taught about firearms at an early age. They don't think of them as toys to mess with.
Either An 870 with 18" barrel or a shorty AR-15 flattop with red dot scope.
A shotgun. You can't miss, it won't go through the wall and kill your neighbor, and it looks and sounds intimidating.
I dont doubt you; its just that with technology today, why risk it. If the perp is outside your house or running away let them go. Unless you or yours is under direct threat, its not worth the hassle.
with tongue in cheek i would imagine. a bloody spot in the yard with a blood trail into the house would be hard to explain.
Either a Rem 870 (my favorite) or a Mossberg shotgun. Get at least 500 shells for it. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to get it out of storage, then you're in a situation where 500 rounds may be what you wind up needing to get you through the next few days
YOU NEED TO PRACTICE WITH IT REGULARLY and clean it after each practice. When things have gone south is NOT the time to be familiarizing yourself with it. It's also NOT the time to discover it has rusted up since the last time you looked at it.
A shotgun (or any firearm) is NOT a magic wand which will visit destruction on any and all bad guys in front of you once you pull the trigger. You DO have to aim the damn thing. More importantly, you have to know how to correctly pump it, and have this be ingrained in your muscle memory, or you will short-stroke it, it will jam, and the bad guy will then insert it up your rectum
Once you've gotten your shotgun, also get a small, reliable, concealable handgun. A Ruger .357 Mag snubby would do nicely. You need it for WHEN your primary gun jams on you at the worst possible time, and also for inconspicuous firepower should you need to go get supplies during a time of unrest and disorder
You just saved me some typing. I would add that you need to take any plug out and I prefer 00 Buckshot in the chamber followed by another, then a deer slug, two more 00 BS and the sixth another slug.
Kimber custom classic 1911 with meprolight sights and a Mossberg 590 7 shotwith ghost rings for backup loaded with 5 oo buck follwed by 2 rifled slugs(for when they get so close you can't miss!
Use buckshot or slugs. Aim for the center of mass. Point and click.
Depending on where you live, you may either be deemed a hero (as would be the case in Iowa) or be required to spend $40K defending yourself before a grand jury, no matter if the thug you bump off ran over 20 nuns on his way to break into your home (as would be the case in California).
LOL......
