The Japanese are going wild for a certain type of French cheese after a leading politician complained the food was hard and dry when it was served up to him during a high level meeting
The former Japanese prime minister complained to the media that the countrys current premier Junichiro Koizumi had served up only beer and dried out cheese when the pair met to discuss Koizumi s reported desire to dissolve parliament and call snap elections.
"He gave me foreign beer and some dried out cheese, so hard you couldn't bite into it," complained Mori.
The politician was clearly expecting more of a lavish welcome from his long-term political ally, but sales of the French cheese Mimolette have reportedly soared in Japan following Moris televised grumblings about the food, the Reuters news agency reports.
Gourmet food and department stores in Tokyo are allegedly selling three times as much of the French delicacy, the flavour of which increases as the cheese ages and hardens.
Although relations between Mori and Koizumi have reportedly chilled after the prime minister called an election campaign two days after their meeting, the Japanese leader is reportedly prepared to eat humble pie and has offered to buy his old friend dinner and a full selection of cheeses at a top restaurant to compensate for his food faux pas.
