Van Morrison Continues To Prove He's Still The Man - Even At 60

Son of a shipyard worker, the bard of east Belfast has had more hits than I've had hot dinners. Internationally acclaimed creative genius Van Morrison will celebrate his 60th birthday on Wednesday and I know the iconic musician isn't keen on talking to anybody about it.
Maybe he'll just ignore it; I would feel the same myself, but it would have been good to talk about his music. Van would rather not do that, so that's alright. Over the years he's attracted all kinds of publicity and I don't know how much of it is accurate. I can only vouch for the five star quality of most of the gigs I've been to and cite the quality of his songs over four decades and dedication to high quality arrangements.
Actually, as far as I'm concerned, his creative genius over-rides whatever the rest of his temperament is. All I know is that at his February gig in the Ulster Hall this year, he was on top of his game and grinning.
To find out what others thought, I decided to phone a few people to ask them to pick out their 'Morrison moments'.

4-21-92 SF awesome audience tape/A+...all time favorite VAN cd-best set list/performance SF has loved Van for many years, that is for sure.
I fully agree, very difficult to single out either one album or one song, as I did.

I really like your profile page. But you actually have that many bootleg tapes of Van & Bob? How the heck did you get those? Every bootleg I've ever listened to (many Dead and a couple of Dylans) has been of very poor sound quality, so I gave up on them years ago.
BTW, the best concert I've ever seen was Bob and Van together at the Columbia River Gorge in central Washington. Unfortunately, Joni Mitchell also was there opening. That was a good time to go drink beer!

Actually I have MORE than that, listed is just my cds, not listed bootleg dvds and cassettes. How did I get them? Well...I've always ben a "cool dude" and met folks who collected stuff, they would share stuff with me and I slowly started building a collection.I don't have anything compared to the people I get stuff from. As far as the sound quality---that varies,I only get the absolute best. The audience recordings are fantastic if done right. Take a $ 5,000 pair of beyer mics, DAT recorder and stand in the "sweet spot" and you get a recording that is BETTER than a commercial release. FReepmail me and ALLOW me to send you some stuff....if done right, bootlegs are better than commercial. When I bought new speakers [a/d/s 2,000 pair} I used Dylan 6-29-01 audience cd to monitor them.....

This tape is from the Great American Music Hall...my fave!
I saw him when he played at Bimbos365 in Jan of 99. I stood 2 feet in front of him! I met a guy who taped the show with the above mentioned beyer/dat setup-A+ recording.Thats one of my best boots as well.....Van IS the Man!

Unfortunately, Joni Mitchell also was there opening. That was a good time to go drink beer! I saw the three of them together in Anaheim, on that same tour. Van opened the show, Dylan closed it and there was a long intermission in between for me and about half the crowd when Joni Mitchell came on.

That's correct. SHe was in the middle. It was a great to have an intermission. They had a beer hall set up with views of the gorge and river below!
Van blew the place away. ANd Bob was as hard rocking as I'd ever seen him.

Van blew the place away. I went with my son to that show in Anaheim, he was 17 at the time. Going into the show he was a big Bob fan, but could have cared less about Van (I play Van daily and the kids got tired of him).
Half way through Van's set he turned to me and said, "Man, his band is really tight". After that he became a Van fan and even bought on his own some CD's of his.

Not to be a "know it all " jerk.....From that tour I have San Jose 5-19-98 soundboard cds of Van and Dylan sets. In some venues they offer "hearing impaired" folks a feed to a FM transmission from the soundboard. You just plug your recorder into the headphone jack and -boom- master soundboard recording! I also have LA 5-21-98, Dylan set and Van "highlites"..B+ audience recording.I have a few recordings of Van and Bob together over the years. Many on dvd.

I went with a gaggle of gals that liked Van but were not Dylan fans. They were highly impressed by both, I'm glad to report!
