The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'm still here, manning the hospital's IT ramparts.

I found out they lost the key to our super-secret disaster recovery drawer sometime last week, and nobody has bothered to call maintenance to get a new key cut. If I have to get in that drawer, I'll get my Camillus BK3 Tactool from my truck, and just pop the drawer open. Please, please let there be just a little disaster.

I'm watching Red Dawn, something I haven't seen in ages. It's that politically incorrect movie from the depths of the Carter malaise. Highly unlikely except for the opening background text, which would have probably come true if Jimmuh had another four years.

What left me stuned was the propaganda the sovs/Cubans were playing to the Americans in the concentration camp. It's now mainstream RAT policy statements today. The crap from DU is even crazier and slimier.

It's impossible to parody leftists because they continually outdo even themselves.

Morning!

Crunch, crunchy, crunchy on the outside.
Squishy, squishy, squishy on the inside.
It's the outside and the inside that's a big darn tootin'!

Sounds good!

Not sure what I'm doing today...putter around with the plants some more maybe...laundry, probably. Think I'll measure the windows so I can make screens for them. Found two panes of glass that may be the doubled panes that I'd been missing.

Good Morning, all quiet this a.m. in the shire, carny's still in the parking lot across the tracks. Guess the octoberfest will continue today as well, for a while at least. Didn't see the tractor club in town this year. Pretty cool old tractors. Walked around last night for a bit, people watching mostly. Where do they come from? Many villages were missing their idiots.

Gypsy is resting after her walk, we're sipping the magic liquid known as coffee and muching on Wolferman's English Muffins with marmalade. hmmmm.

LSA is starting her eye drop regime on the left eye; second eye gets fixed on Tuesday morning at 06:20 hrs. Right eye is 20/20.

Finally got see the first hour of Lost that LSA taped Wednesday night since I was working. I saw most of the second hour when I got home. Great Show.

Good grief! That's not photoshopped is it?

Mornin'. I got back after 1:00 a.m., so I slept in whilst family went to church. We've got a read thru of the show at 2:00 p.m.

No - I don't think it is... I think it's real.

Look on JJ's face says even he thinks she's a moonbat and he wishes he was somewhere else.

So very true. We DVR'd that movie when it was on TV last week. The kids haven't seen it cause they weren't even born when it came out, I don't think.

I told SirKit what you'd mentioned about putting essential info on a flash drive in case of emergency. He was wondering what kind of stuff you put on it. He's thinking of getting an external extra hard drive to which all of us can continually download important info from the various computers in the house so that in the event of an emergency, we can just grab that one and go. I don't have hard copies of photos; they're all on my computer, so I could put those on CD's for safekeeping, but it would be good to have the original files kept safe.

Prayers of thanksgiving for the first surgery going up as well as prayers for success for the next one on Tuesday! I'll also write myself a reminder to pray late Monday night for that early next morning's event!

Oh, I have a couple of external drives too, and my "main" drives are on cheap (non-hot-swappable) drive trays. Given enough time, they all get taken with me.

The USB-drive-in-the-Swiss-Army-knife goes with me everywhere all the time, and contains the most critical data (which also resides on other drives). It also contains handy stuff like device drivers that I may need to install on other computers at work. Also, enough empty space to move other files back and forth when I come across them.

Given the capacity and cost of hard drives today, I've come to the conclusion that the only practical way to back up drives that are approaching a terrabyte in size is to another hard drive. When I first got my DVD burner, I figured I could back up my hard drives with DVDs. I did some quick math, and aside from the time invovled in babysitting the backup and feeding blank DVDs, it would cost me almost as much for the blanks as buying an external USB drive. The only thing cheaper than hard drive technology is newer hard drives.

That's just skeery. And these people want to run the country?

I'm sore this morning from playing softball yesterday! Wow, if it's such good exercise I should try to find people to play with more often.

~sigh~

Alyson's dad just dropped her off.

Late yesterday, she pulled down a heavy lead glass shelf at his house and it fell on her right foot, pinning it.

When he lifted it off, he was relieved to see it wasn't cut - but an hour later it swelled up and that's when he called me.

I wanted him to bring her home, but he insisted on taking her to the hospital - so I gave him the insurance info.

Long story short, she has a hairline facture on the top of her foot, right above where the toes meet the foot. She's in a splint and I've got to take her to the pediatrician tomorrow for a follow-up.

Poor baby. She looks so pathetic limping around with that foot all wrapped up. :-(

And the timing couldn't be worse. She is supposed to start day care tomorrow and with no one else to watch her, I don't know what I am going to do.

I'm so frustrated and upset over it since it means I'll probably have to take more time off of work. And I'm worried about it affecting my employment.

~fret~

Hopefully it will heal quick.

Murphy's law is alive and well. *smiles*

Afternoon!

I started out cleaning up the - ahem - cat closet and ended up cleaning the computer room. Now I have room to put the VCR player beside the computer. Now I have to figure out how to transfer VCR to mpeg.
