Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

We never had cable when it was on. We always saw it on the local PBS station wherever we were.

I think they did start the series in the U.K. again, but I don't think that's the movie I saw... I think the one I saw was a pilot for a series intended for U.S. audiences. Which may be why the "real" fans didn't like it. ;)

Patrick Troughton (the Moe-looking guy) was the second Doctor. The first one was William Harnell.

Our local PBS station never carried the series (couldn't afford it, I guess) and since we didn't have cable we couldn't see any other stations that might have carried it (I think one out of Detroit did, for a while.)

I just watched "Dr. Who and the Daleks." Apparently there's another Peter Cushing/ Dr. Who movie where the Daleks trash London. Let's see if Netflix has that one.

I'm right behind ya, Corin.
Spent a while cruising through the SmoochMoot thread, just reminiscing. What wonderful memories.
But my eyes are betraying me and trying to close on their own accord.
Nighty night Hobbit Hole!

The first one was William Harnell. Was he the old gray haired guy? 'Moe-looking' is the perfect way to describe the second Dr. ;o)

Yes, the old-looking guy. I think all his episodes were in black and white and I don't think that too many of his episodes have survived.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
I know I may lose my geek card by admitting this... but I've never seen a single episode of Dr. Who.*shakes head slowly and sadly*
Oh, Bear...I expected better of you!

I didn't see many until I was overseas, and then the BBC replayed it. I haven't seen every Doctor, I admit.
Jon Pertwee is my favorite of the ones I've seen, as I recall.

THe one I'm thinking of is the guy that always wore puffy shirts...had white hair. I *think* that was Jon Pertwee, but maybe I'm mixing him up?
I know Peter Davison, of course...but to me, he's Tristin from All Creatures Great and Small. Thought he was way too young to play the Doctor when he did. It was just silly.

Luckily, fen are very clique-ish, and the fact that I've never seen Dr. Who can be played as a snobbish affectation among fans of Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, literary SF, etc., etc.

Yeah, Peter will always be Tristan to me. "All Creatures Great and Small" was such a wonderful series. It was hard for me to get used to Robert Hardy as Cornelius Fudge in
Harry Potter because he was so ingrained as Siegfried to me, even though I've seen him in many other parts, including portraying Winston Churchill!
I think Jon Pertwee was the Dr. who was very Edwardian in his dress. Did you ever see any of the Cadfael videos on PBS with Derek Jacobi as the Benedictine Monk? Sean Pertwee, Jon's son, played the Sheriff in a few of those adaptations.

William Hartnell:

He's the first, then Patrick Troughton (the Moe-looking guy), then Jon Pertwee (puffy shirts), then Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy.
To: RosieCotton
Thought he was way too young to play the Doctor when he did. It was just silly.Ain't that the truth! And he couldn't pull the trigger when he had the drop on Davros....wimp!
To: SuziQ
Yeah, I've seen Robert Hardy in a number of movies over the years, and it still throws me off - I always think of him as Siegfried.
The Dr. Who I'm thinking of usually had shirts with kinda frilly colors and sleeves. Is that what you mean by Edwardian?
Oh, and yeah, I've seen a few of the Cadfael shows.

He had a totally different personality from the other Doctors. Didn't work.

I've never seen any Dr. Who either. But then I'm a young geek and haven't seen a lot of things.
And the apostrophe thing is my pet grammar peeve, after "could of".
