The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Nah... just restin'...

Glad to hear you've heard from your people - are you still waiting to hear on anyone?

Mom is waiting to hear if we need to put anyone up for awhile. Otherwise, we are thankful to hear that our family is okay.

That's fine, I don't really need 'em. How did it go?

Well...I didn't do anything. She talked to me about it a little bit, gave me a volunteer form and a informational booklet thing and told me to fill the form out and bring it back. I probably could have done it there, but she wanted me to read the booklet and sign the paper at the back, and I couldn't very well fake it with her there. ;-)

So...I guess I think about it, fill it out, and go back.

There was a fascinating nutcase on the bus today. He got on a few stops before downtown and though he *looked* normal enough, he was going on at the top of his lungs about the evils of feeding squirrels. Said if people kept doing that, the squirrels would start acting like f-ing homeless people and expect hand-outs all the time and maybe even attack people who weren't giving them what they wanted. That was Squirrel Nut Chapter One.

Then he got on the bus AGAIN as I was heading back (Squirrel Nut Chapter Two), and started up the conversation AGAIN with another passenger, who was mostly just nodding. THIS time he said that the earth is a spirit and squirrels and other natural critters are a part of that spirit (uh-huh...city squirrels are truly wild...not), and if we mess with nature by feeding them, it'll come back at us and we'll have overly hot summers and blizzards and hurricanes. By the end of it he was ranting about Katrina...which apparently - following his convoluted logic - was caused by people feeding squirrels in city parks.

Beware the squirrels, man!

Y'know, actually, that part doesn't sound too crazy to me...

Hmm, ok. That's... unusual, even for the bus.

So....what's the nutcase part?

You know, that's exactly what the squirrels do in Austin! Around the university! They WILL attack you for a hand out, because they are unafraid of humans.

This guy's going a bit far with it, though...

I think the nutcase part was the tie between squirrel feeding and blizzards and hurricanes.

Heh...yeah. The first part kinda makes sense. Stoopid squirrels. But I kinda doubt squirrels are to blame for earthquakes and hurricanes...

Groovy, man.

Did I mention I'll only be home for about an hour this evening? Should get back 5:30ish... gonna leave by 6:30, they're expecting a lot of n00bs at anime club tonight.

So...I can practice obnoxious guitar music allllllll afternoon and evening without guilt. Kewl...

Also need to get a few things from the grocery. Why do I never think of things ahead of time? Shoulda gotten off the bus at the Sunflower Market - bet their prices are actually better than the regular grocery for dairy.

Yup, no guilt, except whilst I am eating dinner.

Wish the buses ran all night so I didn't have to drive for evening activities, but oh well, a couple trips uptown once or twice a week won't hurt too much. It's the useless weekend data-tape trips that I hate...

Yeah, it'd be nice if they at least ran later...maybe not all night, but three more hours or so would be nice.

SirKit is from Greenwood, but there is no family left there. Both his parents are dead, and all of his brothers, sisters, and cousins live elsewhere.

A lot of people have absolutely nothing to go back to. That's great that your cousin can help his family members. My brother Mike and his wife Pat have the structure of their house, but there's nothing inside. The storm surge took everything. His truck and her car were unusable, but he got on his ATV after the storm had subsided and went out looking around. He said there were bodies everywhere. This was Monday, just after the storm had hit and before any emergency crews had gotten to them. Must have been horrible. He wasn't able to call his son until late on Tuesday to let him know he was ok. Chris was frantic, and was wanting to go down there looking for them. He is going down now, but to bring Mike and Pat up to live with them in Hernando until they can sort out their lives. They're still better off than some folks, and they know that, and are very grateful for it.
