The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I don't go anywhere. The store, that's it. Today I'm taking the jedis to movies. That's it.

Can't afford the gas.

Filled up yesterday at $2.96 a gallon. Might top off the tank tomorrow afternoon.

I guess it's silly, but the folks back home are running out of gas - price is $4 and up and I read reports that gas stations in the western part of the state are closed with no gas and lockable gas caps are selling like hotcakes.

No lines or closed stations here in KC that I've seen/ heard about.

The only place I go is to work and back. I run errands on the way home from work.

I'm glad I filled up on Sunday. Not that I really need to drive much right now, but even a little bit of driving is costly unless the prices go back down. I'm thinkin' they will...but making this tank last a bit would be a good thing.

I'm going to Catholic Charities this morning to talk to 'em about that volunteer job - data entry. Hope I can find the place...there's a closed road up there, I believe.

Steve is going to fix up his bike and ride it to work. That would save us a BUNCH. We've been contemplating it for a while...now is the time.

Yep...good time.

If I get the job-I'm-hoping-to-get, I'll either ride my bike or take the bus to work. I'm hoping I either get a free bus pass or can purchase one from the college for a discounted price (the bus system's web page says something about employers doing that), but even buying my own, it'd be cheaper than driving.

I can use the bike and bus to get to and from school, that helps. But errands - you can't really go to the grocery store on the bus. Or Wal-mart. And they stop running around 6:30, so my evening events have to be driven to. But I've got a full tank, that'll last a while. And if the prices aren't down when that's gone I'll steal Rosie's gas ;-)

Hehehe...

Gah, why must a professor need his hand held through restarting his computer while I'm trying to get ready to present in class today? I have to talk the entire class period... argh...

I'm thinking maybe I'll take the bus even just to go to the place today. Looking at the map, it'd only be about a ten minute walk from the downtown transit center.

Do that! Walking will be good for you, after all, and you won't have to worry about finding parking.

Heh...sadly it was the parking that decided me, though the gas is an issue.

Finding parking in scary unfamiliar places isn't fun.

Hm...so I COULD go to The Cupboard while I'm there, too. At least look around.

Just heard from my sister in law in Jackson. They are having gas shortages, too. She works all day, so when she gets out, any gas that was available is gone. She's down to half a tank, and they're talking about carpooling in to work. Problem is, people live all over the Jackson Metro Area.

Hmmm....should I start worrying about that happening here?

I guess it wouldn't hurt much to clean out the garage so I can get the car in.

That's a very good idea; keep someone from thinking about siphoning.

Haven't heard of anything like that happening around here (they're too busy wrecking their cars and shooting each other downtown...according to the local news.) But then I practically live on the net so it's on my mind.

Oooh, if you haven't left yet, get me a little can of McVitties... the ones with chocolate on... they're with the English goodies.

My cousin Lanier just got in touch with my mom. They are OKAY. Lanier lives in Greenwood (?) up by Cleveland, and their family is on the coast.

Mom also reports that the University of Texas at Arlington has opened their doors to current college students in New Orleans. They have housing, and in state tuition for those who need it.

Lanier and his family are housing a lot of relatives in Greenwood who were on the coast. Lanier and his wife did not lose anything, but in-laws, and cousins lost everything.
