One of her goals is to raise academic standards, including entrance exam scores.

Oh dear, now we wouldn't want that to happen. Higher academic standards?? The horror.......

I left out an important quote form that story:

"It would raise the caliber of students recruited as student athletes as well. All boats will rise," Dr. Zimpher said.

Frankly, I think the woman has her head up her butt. UC isn't going to compete with the Dukes of the world for student atheletes who have both, talent and brains...

Yeah, God forgive a "liberal" try to increase scores and academic achivement. That's a conservative virtue, not something to be mocked. Thuggins was running a pro team from da hood, not a college team.

I wonder if he would be going to far to ask for a letter of recommendation?

That would be ballsy! He'll take the payoff, if he's smart, sit out for a year, and land at some school in the Big XII or SEC, where the academic standards are low to non-existant.

Don't know who the basketball coach is at the University of West Virginia (Morgantown) ... but I suspect he may be a tad nervous after hearing the news.

That would be John Beilein. No way would Beilein be worried. He led the Mountaineers to the Sweet 16 and is very, very good coach. Remember Pittsnogle and Gansey? Gansey is back, haven't heard whether or not Pittsnogle is. Beilein's teams show discipline and they actually run an offense.

Huggins could have had the whole State of West Virginia plus many $$$ when the job opened 2 years ago.

My cubemate says the latest word is that Pittsnogle is indeed coming back, FWIW.

Yes he is.

John is a great coach who stresses work ethic and an old-style blue-collar game. After last year, he's pretty much a hero in this state. I'm more worried about Cinncy stealing him away than I am Huggins taking his job.

And your reference to Gansey is well deserved - he is a great player. The Mountainteers put my team (Texas Tech) out last year, but like you say, they are disciplined and are enjoyable to watch.

Maybe the new Prez wants the B-Ball players to go to class, study, take exams, pass exams, and generally place more emphasis on the student part rather than the athletic part.

Huggins has 24 hours for a 3 million buyout, if he turns it down will be terminated w/o cause and collect 2 million.

Just went to the MSNsportsNET website and found the Roster.. Pittsnogle is listed. The Roster appears to be the most recent one because both he and Gansey's "class year" has been advanced, along with other players from last year.

Frankly, I think the woman has her head up her butt.

In defense of her, when she was the chancellor at UW Milwaukee (which made it to the sweet 16 last year) the university really improved academically. UW Milwaukee used to be known as mainly a commuter school for area residents, now you could argue that it is the second best university in the state of Wisconsin for academics, right behind UW Madison.

If she can pull it off, then more power to her. But older UC fans have gone through one extended period where UC sports became the nation's joke, so, we have our concerns.(Awww! The amatuer sports purity of the Ed Badger era, and the feel good hiring of Tony Yates. Those were the years UC went from one of the winningest programs to the bottom of the heap.) If this report is true, and Huggs is a goner, then lets just see who Nancy brings in to replace him. It had better be a top rate move!

At one time, he had a zero graduation rate and that was just a few years ago.

Cut to the chase and get to the real important number. How many of his athletes got drafted into the NBA? College ball is just a farm system for the NBA anyway. If the kids were interested in academics they'd be going to good schools or more local schools.

Unless things have changed radically since I was in college UW Madison was never known for academics. It's first and foremost a party school. For academics go to Marquette University. UWM is still a commuter school.

I'm just supplying facts. I couldn't care less about that situation. Someone asked why he was in trouble, I provided a possible reason.
